The time we almost got to see the Queen

I've split this discussion into two as it's quite long. In 1954, I was eight and went to a West Australian government school that catered for quite a large district with many travelling in by school bus from outlying farms. Narrogin was also an important railway town and had had an influx of migrants following World War II. It was March and in a few days, our school would all march down to the train station and watch Queen Elizabeth II pass through on her way down to Albany. She was the first reigning British monarch to visit our shores and her visit was creating huge excitement. At the time of her visit, Australia was experiencing a poliomyelitis epidemic and it was peaking in Perth. There were grave concerns for the safety of our monarch. In the end, the royal couples’ outings were severely curtailed and the train trip to Albany was cancelled. I distinctly remember my sister interrupting our game in the schoolyard. My friends and I were just about to put a plump Dutch boy in a circle drawn on the ground and ‘cook’ him. We were all enjoying the fantasy. Outside the school were my parents and brother. This was unheard of as we only ever came to town on a Friday. Something had to be terribly wrong. Photo is of the Flying Scotsman. It also visited Western Australia and thousands turned out to see it.

Old memories that we can cherish our lives. What was the game? Sounds like an interesting game.

Wow, what a kool photo. I have a friend who survived polio but she does have issues with her legs and tends to limp a bit. The series the Crown didn't mention any of this. It was supposed to be based on facts.

It should have been important given the risk the Queen was in while there @JudyEv My friend told me that she was in leg braces as a child for a while then after she became an adult and gained a lot of weight it got bad again.

Maybe they didn't consider it important. Some who seemed to be okay had problems in later years.

@rebelann In the end, our Prime Minister insisted that the Queen eat only on the ship she was mostly travelling in.

@Tampa_girl7 She has always been squeaky clean - unlike some others of her family.

So many would have been disappointed. She visited 57 towns in 58 days. It was a very hectic tour. She was, and still is, dearly loved.

It's funny that what I've told in the text is all I remember about that time. But I definitely remember 'cooking' the school friend.

Okay, you have my curiosity at peak level. What game were you playing that you were about to put a Dutch boy in a circle and cook him? That's great you got to see Queen Elizabeth II as she traveled by train. It's sad there was such a polio epidemic that her trip was cut short. Nice photo.

Yes, it was a shame. Everyone was very fearful that the Queen might catch polio. Although they didn't know till later, she had shaken hands with a lady who was a carrier. They would have both had gloves on.

That's pretty cool. Prince Charles visited the Port Authority in Esperance when Vince was working there. Vin also drove one of the official cars. He got a good photo of him.
