Ever heard of scoby - or kombucha?

Occasionally you can come across a statement which makes absolutely no sense to you. This happened tonight on our local Facebook Buy and Sell page. The entry read: Does anyone have some scoby to make some kombucha?
We’ve never heard of ‘scoby’ or ‘kombucha’. I’m sure some of you would have and perhaps even use it/them but if you’re like us and totally in the dark, here is some information.
‘Scoby’ is an acronym for Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast. It is a living home for bacteria and yeast and is used to transform sweet tea into kombucha. One website says to think of it as the ‘coral reef of the bacteria and yeast world’.
Kombucha is a fermented, sweetened black or green tea. It is slightly alcoholic and a bit effervescent. Juice, spices or other flavourings are sometimes added. It is also called tea mushroom or tea fungus.
Another coincidence is that we got talking to an assistant in our supermarket who talked about ‘vegan leather’ and how could that be ‘real’. I’ve now read that, in Queenland, researchers have been using kombucha scoby to produce a workable bio-textile, called a "vegan leather". I wonder if I’ll come across a third reference to this.
I’ve added a photo of the doe that hangs around the house. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen her for several days although we’ve seen her yearling. This makes us wonder if something has happened to her. I hope not but I guess it will be what it will be.

I've never heard of Scoby but Kombucha is pretty popular around here, especially with the "healthy" crowd. My girlfriend drinks it a lot, but I just haven't been able to get used to the taste. I'll stick to regular teas.

@Tampa_girl7 I just don’t like the fermented taste of it. I can drink one every now and then, but I just couldn’t do it on a regular basis.

Kombucha is a huge rage in the US. There are bars and everything.
I figure my mom used to make me smell the milk, and throw the spoiled milk away for a reason. If it is spoiled I ain't eating it!

We were always sniffing milk too. And meat as we butchered our own and milked our own cows.

@rebelann Growing up on a farm where you killed your own meat and very, very rarely called in a vet because they were too expensive, I think I have a bit different attitude towards animals to many. I still don't like to see them ill-treated or abused and I'd call a vet now for any pets I had. But I think my basic attitude is a bit different.

I never heard of Scoby, Kombucha is available in the stores from many years. I remember I had a sip when they introduced the product. It seemed not too bad in the store, I bought a couple of bottles and I found that it tasted horrible at home. I never bought again.

I've heard kombucha is super healthy, but it just doesn't sound like something one should eat.
That is awesome that the kangaroos come so close. I hope she's alright, too

Yes, I've heard of those (I had a scoby for years and drank the tea every day.). I also know about kefir, too.

I'll have to look up kefir but will do it later. Short of time at the moment.

What I know is that kombucha is a fermented drink with probiotics in it. So it has health benefits. Never tasted, never bought one. But since it is fermented, I assume it tastes sour and ugh! Am I right?

I haven't tasted it either but others say it tastes a bit 'different'.
