Thanksgiving is no place for Vegans!

We tried. We really did. My two nephews, my niece and I went out for Thanksgiving. This was my first holiday as a vegetarian in many years. My niece has been a vegetarian for a few years now and my nephew has been vegan for many years. My other nephew eats anything that doesn't move! lol The restaurant has said that they would probably have something that we could all eat. Well, they were wrong. As soon as we saw the menu, we looked at each other and shook our heads. While many states have gotten the message that not everyone eats meat these days, our state has no clue. There were only two things on the menu for non-meat eaters: stuffed mushroom caps (although I'm sure there was butter in there somewhere, but my nephew at them anyway) and, on the children's menu, cheese ravioli. However, they would not serve those to adults. My niece and I ordered entrees and asked that the meat be held back. We ordered extra pasta that came with the meal and we had the salad and other sides. It was good for me. My vegan nephew only ate a couple of mushroom caps and stopped. He has decided that for Christmas, he will cook at his place! Poor guy needs to eat! A third nephew who lives in Virginia is hoping to come up the day after Christmas, so we will be celebrating with him then. It will be the first time that I've been able to be with all three nephews and my niece in more years than I can remember! Being thankful was evident at our table despite the food. We had a lot of fun just sharing stories and being together. Hopefully when the "missing piece" is back with us, it will be even better! Peace Claudia

That's so sad, for you should be able to celebrate with the family while dining out. Locally, on Oahu, we got vegan restaurants to go to. Hope your family will have a wonderful holiday season and having it at home will be good since you've got no specialty restaurants for vegans, ...yet.

My (vegan) nephew used to live in Oregon where there are also a lot of vegan restaurants. I think we have, maybe 2? It's sad and I hope that we get a few more vegan restaurants just to have a change of pace!

i'm kinda surprised one 'f y'all didn't jest cook somethin' 't home versus testin' the waters by eatin' out. 'tis most rare i eat out, e'en then i don't coz i bring my own food. cross-contamination 'tis a huge issue fer me regardin' gluten.

@CRK109 not room 't yer place fer 3 folks to eat? dang, i've packed 37 here'n my lil house fer holidays, lol. thankfully not all't once, but 'twas still purty tight space wise. cowboys'd wander through when they could, gettin' breaks from workin'. that nephew needs to be findin' a table, eh? lol

The problem is that my (vegan) nephew has no kitchen table yet. My place is way too small for all of us. And since my niece hosts all of us for Christmas, we wanted to give her a break! So we unfortunately thought that going out for a meal would be a good choice. We have learned our lesson!

I hate mushrooms I would have been miserable if that were my only option. I would have ate nothing rather then eat that.

I agree. I keep hearing that more and more people are giving up meat so pretty soon restaurants will have to either offer something for everyone or watch their seats remain empty.

Yes, these holidays are so important to hug and love on those we don't see often. We can worry about food later. It's the love that really matters.

That's the plan for next year. My place is just too small for all of us and my nephew doesn't have a kitchen table yet. But we're working on the Christmas plans so we can all cook something and meet up somewhere that can accommodate us.

I'm sorry you had such hard time with the menu. I guess it isn't easy being a vegan at a restaurant. Glad you were in good company though

Restaurants are way behind the times. You should have all come to my house. We had plenty of vegan and vegetarian dishes which even the meat eaters gobbled up.
