How long to learn a song?

I have about 25 to 30 songs that I badly want to learn. I am told if you learn those, you can sing anything under the sun. Indian music that will make me expert in western, including operas.. Now ..sometimes I wonder why I want to sing perfectly? I enjoy music..it is the function of my ears..they need to give me that joy... And I am most certainly not looking forward to winning some reality show.. And the lazy me gives up. But every time I listen to complex Indian music, I am tickled...I gotta try that..kinda Do you like simple English songs, or like them because of complexity in them.. Whats it about music..the more complex it gets, more we want to learn it. Same is not true about math or physics.

Did you listen to that link? Do you like something as complex as that? I literally swoon over Kaushiki Chakraborty...her darbari... and there is a bhajan she sings...

Well no expert here and definitely not Indian music but my favorite taught me everyone can do it except me. Why he is different because really would love everyone to bring a song. It motivates him when he hears the different life takes. Then he goes now I can write one. So my answer is it takes as long as it takes to you are happy. That is very pretty, very spiritual.

I like music for many reasons, for the rhythm, for the words, for the feeling it can transmit. I mainly like Italian songs, just because I can better appreciate the lyrics.

So it is lyrics you focus on. I think I too focus on lyrics when the song is a melody because of it. But I may be more inclined towards classical. I feel.

@vandana7 I love classical music (NO words, only music). Operas often have very poor lyrics, they only focus on the difficulty to sing the piece and not on the words. If you knew Italian, you would understand what I mean, the lyrics of the Operas are often ridiculous.

I am not a singer and not even an authority in music. But from what I have learned from my musician friends, it is best to master the songs one by one. Don't go to the next song until you have fully memorized the lyrics and melody perfectly.

That is something different from what this friend said. She said, try first few lines of every song a few times each day ..it will bring versatility in your notes...god knows my singing has gone from bad to worse after that.
