We were closing down the preschool today. It was about 4:45 PM. My co-teacher's sister had come to visit with her two kids, aged 7 1/2 and 9 1/2. As we were closing up, my co-teacher's sister said, "I can't find my keys!" She desperately searched the classroom and the teacher's room, and still couldn't find them. I fired up my pipe, took a snort of cocaine (while playing with a 3-year-old), mused for about 30 seconds, and came up with the solution. Her 7 1/2 year old had had to pee really badly about 15 minutes pervious. She is not allowed in the "adult" bathroom, and didn't want to pee in the kid bathroom, which has no privacy. I had suggested her mom take the child to the kid bathroom in the other classroom, which was closed down for the day. Success occurred. I said, "Did you check the bathroom in the other classroom? We often 'forget' things when our routine is broken." She found her keys in the bathroom where she had taken her daughter. Have you noticed that we often lose things when our routine is disturbed? Do you think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle should be reincarnated to write about The Horse's incredible problem-solving skills?

I can lose stuff without breaking my routine.

Heh. I can too. But I stand by my "break in routine" hypothesis.

Yes, you should write a book about your "routine is disturbed" problem-solving skills!

I have noticed that we do "silly" things when our "routine" is challenged.

@Deepizzaguy I am about to switch from my long pants to shorts for cycling today. I have my routine for switching my wallet, keys, etc. from one pair of pants to another. But I have to remember to switch the "bonus check" I received at work yesterday from my left rear pocket to the left rear pocket of my shorts. Else, it will wind up lost or laundered.

Another case of automatic hands, where we do things and our brain never even notices.

Yeppers. There are times when I cannot remember (for sure) which hand operates the turn signal and which operates the windshield wipers. But I always get it right when I'm driving.

When I cannot find something I always go back to the places where I have been, we are often distracted and we forget. My husband could not find the keys of the car after he parked in our garage and I told him, check inside the car, you surely have not removed them from the dashboard... correct!

Ah, right again. Perhaps you are Jim Chee or Joe Leaphorn (two for my favorite Tony Hillerman sleuths).

Way to go Sherlock. I have been lucky to find things by first looking in places they could be and then in places they should not be but many times are
