They deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Duran Duran

Some months ago both Scott Ganschow and fourwalls presented lists of performers whom they consider worthy of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and are being snubbed. Now it is time to put my two cents in the jukebox with my own selections. I will endeavor not to duplicate those previously named though several would be top personal choices. Consideration is drawn upon personal judgement and criteria established by the Hall of Fame. Artists are presented in alphabetical order. Duran Duran has a legion of detractors. Critics loathe Duran Duran as pretty boys performing glam pop who became stars because of MTV videos. Another victim of the prejudice of the Hall of Fame and Rolling Stone Magazine against 80s new wave bands. Duran Duran were colossal being the most popular and commercially successful group to emerge from the new wave/alternative era. Over 100 millions records sold. Sales count for something. Formed in Birmingham in 1978, the UK outfit went through several personnel changes until settling on the classic lineup of Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes and the unrelated Taylors John, Roger and Andy. They enjoyed eight platinum albums and 11 gold plus 16 top 20 hits including #1’s “The Reflex” and “A View to a Kill.” Hit after hit like “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Girls on Film” and “Union of the Snake.” Duran Duran has won two Grammy Awards and have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Cited as influence by Justin Timberlake, Pink, Gwen Stefani, Beck, Barenaked Ladies, Korn, Panic at the Disco, Dido and Franz Ferdinand. Elton John is a fan. Get over it, Hall of Fame. You inducted Journey for God sakes.

The group had a lot of success within a short time span, before band members split off to explore side projects with other bands/musicians. Just a speculation but perhaps this hurt their body of work and contributed to being overlooked by the Hall so far?

The same can be said for Journey and other short term bands elected or even the ridiculous like Tom Waits.

@dgobucks226 There's a lot of prejudice and petty grudges involved.

@JohnRoberts Oh I agree Tom Waits was a ridiculous choice. Journey in my view was worthy. They were highly successful band whose popular period from1978 and 1987 was filled with commercial success. I do think Duran, Duran should be inducted. They charted more top tens than Journey in a shorter period of time. I was just pointing out a possible reason why they have been overlooked. In retrospect, sometimes there seems to be no rhyme or reason for the committee's choices other than a whim.

I like and support your pick. I am flabberghasted, really, that they have only won two Grammys. They have hung in for decades and reinvented themselves a time or two (remember Arcadia?). They definitely deserve consideration! Also, I got a giggle from "the unrelated Taylors"--sounds like a band name in itself!

I'll also say I saw them in concert twice, about 20 years apart, and they absolutely rocked it both times!

There was a lot that they accomplished, that's for sure. And I personally did not mind their music. Should they be in the Hall of Fame? Not sure, but it seems maybe they might.

Not really a fan (save for “Hungry Like the Wolf”), and musically I tend to agree with JJ. But Fame? They got it!
