They deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Sonny & Cher

Some months ago both Scott Ganschow and fourwalls presented lists of performers whom they consider worthy of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and are being snubbed. Now it is time to put my two cents in the jukebox with my own selections. I will endeavor not to duplicate those previously named though several would be top personal choices. Consideration is drawn upon personal judgement and criteria established by the Hall of Fame. Artists are presented in alphabetical order.
And why not? Sonny and Cher are more famous than inductees Hall and Oates and a case can be made in their defense. To begin with, they boast two classic enduring songs in “I Got You Babe” (#1 1965) and “The Beat Goes On” (1967). Sonny was an accomplished producer and songwriter who penned songs for others. Factor in Cher’s career. She would probably prefer being inducted with Sonny who died in 1998 than as a solo artist.
Their original 1971-74 television variety series was a success until their divorce ended it. A reboot failed as well as their 1967 movie “Good Times.” They charted nine top 20 hits. Sonny and Cher were good but not great but the same can be said of many Hall of Fame inductees. In fact, Sonny and Cher are better and longer lasting than such inducted ’60’s relics as the Lovin’ Spoonful and the Rascals.

They opened the door to pop acts. Sonny & Cher are more deserving than Brenda Lee who was inducted long before Linda Ronstadt!

@JohnRoberts But in fairness are they more know for their TV show, their divorce or their talent?

I don't know about that one. A couple of big 60's hits does not make a HOF career in my view. It probably comes down to one's opinion on whether having a hit TV show should count in their consideration. For me, I would say no. But it's all in one's viewpoint and I don't have a vote, lol.

I base a lot on precedent and whom the hall has already inducted. Sonny & Cher are certainly more deserving that some inducted rap group with one hit (Grandmaster Flash). Rap isn't rock. Pop is closer to rock.

@JohnRoberts Totally agree with your viewpoint on the Hall. Unfortunately, they have set broad standards which make it difficult to accurately access a group or artists credentials to be Hall worthy. Yes, Rap artists definitely are not Rock n' Roll along with many other genre's which have already been admitted. I guess based on the mess the induction committee has created Sonny and Cher should be let in, along with another popular duo The Captain and Tennille (just kidding)..

Cher had the talent in that duo, but yeah, maybe.

She was the star. Sonny was the motivator and producer.

Hmm, Sonny may have written songs, but he was not a good singer. Cher carried them most of the way. I guess I might disagree on them going in as a pair. But then too, you have valid points. If I remember correctly, Cher refused to perform at all if Sonny was not there with her. (Don't know where I picked that up but with Sonny's voice, it was easy to believe.)

That was when they were an in love happy young couple. Right now on Cher's latest "Farewell tour", she sings "I Got You Babe" to Sonny singing on a big screen. The wonders of today's tech. She won't do that song without Sonny.

@JohnRoberts I guess I can understand that. It was a strong testament to their relationship. Something that means a lot for her.

Oh, hail yes! The influence alone (after they showed up seems like everyone wanted a husband-and-wife duet [although they were hardly the first married couple to perform together], and the TV show)!

So I take it Sonny and Cher were not in the Hall of Fame. They should have been and you are right.
