With or without arms?

I am looking at chairs. I haven't moved my bed yet, nor have I gotten the bookcases, but I am pretty sure I'll have plenty of space for a chair. Of course, it's not something that is within my budget to get at the moment. However, I am still considering them and possibly getting one on a payment plan. I'm looking to spend no more than $300.00, and if I can get away with it, I'd like to spend only $250 or below. Now what I have to ask myself is whether I want a recliner or just a normal chair. A recliner might be nice, but I am not sure that I'll have room for the reclining aspect of it. So then I've been looking at just padded chairs. Those ones with no arms is kind of cute, but I know I'd get annoyed at not being able to put my arms on an arm rest, or my back against the arm rest. Have you ever bought one of those living room chairs that have no arms but are nicely padded? Did you regret it? How expensive is too expensive for a chair in your opinion?

We got rid of the recliner in the living room. No one used it other than the dogs

You saying that reminds me of a time I slept on the dogs love seat. My friend had a love seat in her room and we were chatting and she ended up asking if I wanted to just sleep in the room with them. I slept on the love seat and you should have seen the look her dog gave me. It was such a "but you're in my chair"

There are recliners that are "wall away" design so they do not take up as much room. I have only bought recliners new, not wall away style and have paid $250, on the other hand my sister did "rent to own" and paid $700 which is too much in my opinion.

I won't be doing rent to own for sure. I was looking at wayfair last night and they had some payment options. I won't make any decisions until everything is arranged the way I want it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum The only thing close to a chair was a beanbag that I had in my room.

@Tina30219 See, I've considered that too but I would want a big one and that's going to cost about as much as a chair would. I've also considered just getting a futon mattress or something similar and then adding pillows to it.

The chairs I've had in my bedrooms have always hard arms. I do have one little papasan type chair that was cheap, it has no arms. I am looking to actually get rid of it or move it somewhere else out of my way.

The chairs around our formal dining table are nicely padded but have no arms. No I never regretted buying them. Chairs are expensive here, the only non expensive I could find are those sold by Ikea. The cheapest nicely padded and with arms is about $90 at Ikea, the cheapest padded with no arms $ 35.

Yes, I don't know that I will be looking at ikea for any. I would have to travel to another city to go to Ikea anyway. I like those padded dining chairs. I've seen some dining chairs with arms but I think those can get in the way. My ex mother in law had a dining room table with padded chairs that had arms. The chairs actually resembled a computer chair more than it did a dining chair.

@LadyDuck Sometimes those chairs with arms do not get close enough to the table. That was the problem with my ex-mother in law's chairs. The way the arm was designed, and the way the table was designed, you could not get close enough to the table without sitting at the edge of the chair.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I had lunch in some restaurants that had padded chairs with arms, they are not practical, you hit your elbow while you eat.

I wouldn't spend more than a thousand for a chair. For me, chairs must have arms.

I can't imagine spending anywhere above $500 for a chair myself. It would have to be a truly comfortable and multi-functional chair for me to spend $1000.

@Telynor Are you referring to the ones that will dunk you out of it?

@ScribbledAdNauseum I like the adjustable recliners, where I can set the angle at just what I want. It does sound absurd, but I want to find something that will last.

What is the purpose of this chair? To look good or to provide a comfy place to curl up with a book? I do most of my reading in a small spring rocker. The seat and back are upholstered but the arms are wooden. And I have a little footstool to put my feet on.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I got mine at a yard sale many moons ago, so it didn't cost much, and everyone who's ever sat in it remarks how comfy it is.

For reading, and I have actually considered the type of chair you have suggested as well.

@BarBaraPrz I am sure I could probably go to goodwill and find such a chair, but I am weary about used furniture unless I know the person.

Right? I don't know who is going around with no arms on their chairs (other than dining chairs) but wow, what a life they must live!

It's the same here, honestly. I have a futon in another room that I could put in my room theoretically, but it's covered in things that don't belong to me.
