Jack Nicholson didn't know this, did you?

Apparently Jack Nicholson wasn't told until he was in his 30's that the woman he had grown up thinking was his sister was actually his mother. His grandmother took on the role of his mother and both mother and grandmother didn't feel any need to let him know the truth. Of course, this could have also been because of the time period and generational standards. Did you know that even Marilyn Monroe had to make a choice? Her mom abandoned her and she grew up in foster homes. At the age of 16 they gave her a choice. Either she went to another home or she got married. She chose marriage. Here's a link to a few more people who had similar stories. I was surprised by a few of these.

I didn't know that about Jack Nicholson. It seems unfair to keep him in the dark about it for so long.

I agree with you there, but I think it must have been a point of shame for the grandmother at the very least, and that is probably why he was never told.

@jaboUK Yet, and I'm sorry to say this, no one blamed the man. It was just as much the man's fault, if not more. I'm not saying that women were all little flowers that were meant to be treated with care, but there were plenty of men out there who only cared about the moment, and didn't think of, or care, about the repercussions or how it would be on the mother. Again, not saying that the women were faultless either. Oh, and here I go ranting. Sorry.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That's very likely true, unmarried mothers were frowned upon in those days.

I did not know that about Jack Nicholson. I went to school with a girl who's older sister was a very young teenage mother, and her mother and father raised that child like it was her brother.

My own mother was a very young teenage mother but this was in the 70s. My brother was raised by my mom with the help of my grandmother. My grandmother wanted to take him from her but the law was called and my grandmother was straightened out on that point.

@Juliaacv I think it must have been. My brother was born in '77. My mother and my brother's father tried to run away. They made it to Tennessee where my grandfather had to go and pick them up.

@ScribbledAdNauseum The girl that I knew that was a young mother was in the early to mid 70's, must have been something about that era.

It still happens today. I think I had heard this about Jack Nicholson.

Yes it does, but to a significantly lesser degree. Moms are now more likely to help their daughter raise the child, but with the child knowing from the start who his mother is. Society has grown in a way, and while people are still going to talk down about a young, unwed mother, there are too many other things to worry about than how a person is perceived by others.

That sort of thing can mess up a child.

It really can. It messes them up as an adult too, if they didn't learn that they were adopted until many years later. Do you remember the author Grace Livingston Hill? One of my favorite books by her is called Brentwood. She had no idea that she was a twin, and that her real family was living in poverty while she lived in style. She had been adopted by a rich family and they didn't tell her of her actual lineage until her adoptive mother was dying.

@LindaOHio Ah yes, and let me clarify, that was the plot of the book and not the reality of Grace Livingston Hill.

That is interesting about Jack Nicholson. I didn't know that about him. I have seen movies with a similar plot to his real life situation.

Yes, I have too. I saw one that was an indie film from another country. I think Israel, but I could be wrong.

Not sure I knew that about either of them..although I knew Marilyn grew up in foster homes. She was apparently very intelligent from what I have heard.

I have heard that she was really intelligent, but had no idea about the foster situation.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I know - it's so sad because it was all about saving face. But I guess society was a lot harsher then and people just did what they thought was right at the time.

@Lushlala Yes, people had completely different ideals and morals back then. I am sure that if we took someone from the 1800s and gave them life again they would be terrified and ashamed of what the world is like now.

Yes, people were ashamed if their child had a baby out of wedlock.
