What digital camera would you recommend?

I'm working on my christmas list to give my husband. I'd like a new digital camera this year. I'm generally partial to Canon products, and I would just LOVE to have a Digital Rebel, even one of the older ones because, really, who needs 10 megapixels for recreational photography? I'm good with 6! I'd like a DSLR, but with money being tight this year, I'm looking for something that takes great quality pictures and isn't too complicated to use. It'd be great if it had a nice zoom and decent battery life as well.
Anyway, I am looking for digital camera recommendations. What have you used, what do you like? Like I said, I generally get Canon products, but I'm not completely dedicated to them.

Look for one with more optical zoom rather than digital zoom. The digital zoom is good if you have a tripod and everythin gsits perfectly still. The higher optical zoom will allow you to zoom in closer and allow the camera to take clearer pictures. Pretty much 3X optical zoom is the standard on the market right now. The professional cameras are going as high as 12X-18X which takes phenomenal close ups, but for a regular user try to get onewith the 5x or 6x optical zoom. This is where the technology is now. The prices can be high for certain cameras, but if you look around you can ofter get a good deal. I recommend check out Best Buy or BestBuy.com for more information.

Thanks for explaining the difference between digital and optical zoom. I've seen them listed but never really looked into what they meant!

I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ20 and I like it very much. It's only 5 megapixels but they suffice in most cases.
I read that Panasonic are not very good at dark because of noise at higher ISO levels and I bought mine because I usually don't shot at dark.
And they have a very good stabilizer.
