How School Days Were In The Past Compared With Today

School used to be a lot different many years ago. Here are some things that have gone away or faded from our school systems. -Teachers had more respect and authority: in fact, corporal punishment could be administered to unruly students to enforce discipline. I recall my Catholic school friends telling me of the Nuns who would wack a student on the knuckles to get a pupil in line. There was no paddling in the school's I attended, however 19 U. S. states still can use punitive punishment. -None/Few Teacher Assistants- with increased student enrollment the ratio of assistants has grown. I remember having student teachers who observed when I went to school but no teacher's helpers. -No technology: today school's have computers and other tech devices to use at home/library and school. Online research is a big part of school homework today. -Today's school employ more support staff. Schools now employ health services staff such as social workers, psychologists, and speech therapists, in addition to security personnel. -Fewer girl sports were offered in the schools of the past. The only girl "sport" I remember in my school days was Cheerleading. Now all kinds of athletic teams are available for the girls. -Girls learned domestic skills/boys took shop. Home Economics for girls and Metal and Wood shop for the boys. Today many states have eliminated shop classes. Hope you enjoyed this little historical retrospective. Feel free to provide your opinion, recollections or comments on any of these items. Maybe you can come up with one I missed? Source- 24/7 Tempo

The only real big change in schools is that they have become a cesspool of liberal indoctrination of our kids. If I had kids, I am not sure I would allow them to go. I'd just home school them.

Yes, Another change is a different curriculum is taught in school's today. Possibly some of that liberalism your talking about. And what's with these kids and their parents today? We use to walk to school: I had to travel over a mile from my home. Now it's chauffer service from parents and buses.

It is certain that things are huge different. When my sister went to public school, there was no computer with a huge projector, but I did.

Yes, very true. No computers for me either. School supplies were definitely simpler years ago.

@Behindtheguitarbar My thought is with most changes there is probably a combination of good and bad things about progress.

@dgobucks226 But I hardly can say whether it is good or bad with a computer while learning.

They did stereotype shop and home ec classes. They had girl's volleyball when I was in high school. School was a lot more fun without all that technology. Now, you can't live without it.

Yes, it seems we all have fallen victim to the different technology today both good and bad. I went to the movies yesterday and noticed the ticket machines they now have there only accept debit/credit. If you want to pay cash roughly around $10. you had to wait on a large line. Guess cash is no longer king? And where would we be without e-mail, text, PC's, and bill pay, I resisted for a long time but eventually accepted the change. Actually, now that I'm used to it, there are good points. We also had the stereotyped shop/home ec classes, but remember by my senior year that boys could take also take the class and a few did

@dgobucks226 They still take cash at our theaters, but the hold up is choosing our seats at the register. I guess that lets them know when it's sold out. I don't go to the expensive times and days. We have $5 Tuesday and $5 senior Friday. That works for me. I'm still behind in some technology, but when it comes to bill pay, I was on board with that right away. It took me a long time to get used to texting. I still don't use my phone for anything except tracking my steps talk and text. When I graduated from high school sometime in the last millennium, there was still a distinct dividing line between shop and home ec.

@just4him Oh right, the choosing of seats a somewhat recent change. Yes, bill pay is a development I really like as it saves on buying stamps and going to the post office. Total agreement on the texting.

Yes me too. Simple desks and basic school supplies too. And a change here in the U.S. from rural to city areas which meant more cars. Now we have student parking lots and many Juniors and Seniors have cars. Now the problem is not enough parking space for students.

@dgobucks226 Since kids are now kept at school longer here too, the parking has become an issue.

I definitely remember all of this. It's sad in a lot of ways the way schools have become.

Many things have changed. Some as a result of social issues. In the past some school's actually had separate entrances and classes for boys and girls. And when I attended school gym class was not co-ed. And Less cars back then than today. Now we have student parking lots and many Juniors and Seniors have cars. Now the problem is not enough parking space for students.

More walking to school back in the past. Back then areas were more rural and families had only 1 car to use. So, no driving from parents.
