The Spring Blocks

When I started this quilt last spring, the spring blocks seemed very appropriate. Initially I pieced the block and added the elements. Glue and pins and here and there just a stitch to hold something in place. After adding the elements on the block it was time to stitch them down. I had inherited a mountain of embroidery floss when my mom passed away a few years ago. Now was the time to pull them out of the "mothballs" and let them see the light of day. The covering of seams with decorative stitching was going to wait until we were travelling across the country. It seemed the perfect carry along project to work on in the evenings.

The was thing was, all the beads I gave away when we moved...."knowing" I would not need them.

That is awesome! You make some very beautiful quilts! We have a quilting club that meets weekly in one of our city recreation centers, and they are always making beautiful quilts as well. But the best part is that once they all finish a quilt, they donate it to the local homeless shelter. I've always considered that admirable because I know how much time goes into making those quilts.

I have a quilt finished that I'm donating to our local nursing home to raise funds for their garden project. Last year I donated a quilt and they raised almost $1500.00.

The twelve blocks I intend to show (over the next week or so) are all part of a fair sized quilt that I am making as a wall hanging for my home. It was a part of "Crazy Seasons Mystery Quilt". The clues were released over about a six month period and these are the blocks. With the embellishments it would not be a good choice for a baby quilt.

@Morleyhunt Yes, and that is actually what I thought it was for, a wall hanging for a playroom or nursery.

@Juliaacv this wall quilt will finish at about 65" X 80". There are three blocks for each season. Some changes were made to some of the blocks to reflect my personal tastes and style.

@LadyDuck I will write at least a post a day for the moment. Life has a way of keeping me extremely busy. Who knew that retirement could be so fulfilling.

Thank you. Choosing the colours was part of the fun. I didn't follow the recommendations of the designer, but followed my own inspiration,

Thank you. The blocks finish at 16 inches square. This gave me lots of room to play with embellishments.

This is so unique. I absolutely love all the decorative stitching covering the seams. There is so much to look at!

Deciding what decorAtive stitching to use was probably almost more difficult than assembling and appliqueing the actual elements.

I love the theme and your spring blocks are different than any quilting patterns I've ever seen.

This entire project was well outside of what I normally do, but I decided that this was one way I could challenge myself.A few little bumps in the road, but I'm really pleased with the results.

I know what the "finished" quilt looks like. I'm enjoying releasing one block at a time for viewing. Let the anticipation build.
