Jenolan Caves House saved from the bush fires

I read today that the historic Jenolan Caves House has been saved from the bushfires in eastern Australia. Fire crews have battled for weeks to save the 122-year-old heritage-listed building, which was rebuilt in 1898 after a fire destroyed the original building. However, the Rural Fire Service shed and three unoccupied staff cottage buildings were lost in the blaze. The limestone caves are located 175 kilometres east of Sydney in the Central Tablelands region in New South Wales They are the oldest discovered open caves in the world and contain some spectacular formations. There are over 40 kilometres of passages. A quarter of a million visitors tour the site each year. Lucas Cave was the first cave discovered in 1860 and includes the Cathedral Chamber with its 50 metre high ceiling and wonderful acoustics. Concerts are often held there. Nettle Cave is home to some stromatolites which are estimated to be at least 20,000 years old. When we visited the area, there was no public transport to the caves. I loved the entry to the House which is through a hole in the rock face. On passing through, Caves House appears like something from a previous time. Although there is much work to be done at the site, at least the historic building has been saved.

@FayeHazel Yes, we are but of course it only needs a dropped match or a lightning strike to have us packing up and getting out too. We are tucked up in a corner with bush on two sides and our own little patch of bush on our own property. Here is an aerial view. We have quite a decent cleared patch round the house itself with not much garden so that is a comforting thought.

I loved those caves! And the house, good they saved it. I didn't really like driving down there, really windy and narrow. And all the stupid persons who couldn't wait to take pictures til the light came on in the caves, but insisted using a flash in the dark, blinding everyone

@JudyEv Yes, it's not the place you'd want to drive a fire truck or wrestle with any kind of heavy equipment.

It's nice that you saw them. Some people are really rude and clueless sometimes. If you've been down that road, you can imagine how hard it was to fight the fires.

I'm not sure why it took so long. Maybe, in the beginning, they didn't expect the fires to be so bad. Later, your big water-bomber planes were held up because of a tornado in their flight path.

Much of the fire is in very rugged country and will take quite some times to put out. They are having good rains over there now which is helping.

It is very difficult terrain there and hard to control or put out fires. They fought this one for quite some time. Hopefully the danger is past now.

This is good to hear, I hope the bush fires did not destroy anything that is of historical or cultural significance in your country.

We had a whole town wiped out a couple of years ago and a very special museum was burnt to the ground. It was very sad as many people had put a huge amount of work into making it what it was.

They can never be restored or rebuilt in the same way once they've been burnt to the ground.
