What Are Grits? I Can Answer That

I have eaten grits my entire life. It is usually a southern tradition. But many from all over the country know what grits are. I am having them for dinner tonight. I add butter and a little cheese to mine, sometimes sprinkle bacon on the top. Sometimes I make biscuits to go along with them, other times fried eggs. You can fix them different ways. Also shrimp and grits are good. When I talk about grits, many will ask what they are. So I am providing a link for you to read about them. They are made from ground corn. Anyone have plans for dinner?

I know a lot of you do not understand grits. They are not actually a porridge. They are made from ground corn. Hard to describe.

I never heard of grits before meeting my husband. Lol. I just made them for my kids earlier with cheese and butter-I do not eat them as I don't like a sandy texture.

I love grits and can't wait to have some again. I haven't had any since July. I will allow myself to have some soon. I've been eating very low carb.

I had shrimp and grits for lunch yesterday! I love grits, and as a Southern boy, I was raised on them. Funny story. One time I was in Minnesota, and I went to Denny's for breakfast. I always get the Grand Slam from Denny's anytime I go there. Anyway, as I placed my order, I asked for a side of grits with extra butter. The waitress looked at me and said, "What the hell is a grit?" I laughed so hard! She had no idea, being from up north and all.

@CarolDM Shrimp and grits is one of my favorites. We have this local restaurant that specializes in New Orleans cajun recipes, and they have the most amazing shrimp and grits. It's close by my office at work, so I'll go there often for lunch.

Gross. I'm sorry, but there's no way I'm eating that. I think it's worse than spam and that's saying a lot. I'm sorry if I offended you. I thought it was a breakfast porridge like cream of wheat, but it's a lot more.

@CarolDM I'm glad you weren't offended. That's okay, I don't like cream of wheat either. Though I can tolerate it with a lot of maple syrup in it. Now, it along with all other grain cereals are off my diet. Works for me. Though I do love oatmeal, so that's a bummer.

When I was in the Philippines last year, I bought a ground corn when I saw it in the market. It reminded me of my childhood that my mother cooked porridge out of it. I cooked it like the way I cooked rice and it was filling to my tummy. I didn't know it is called grits. I will check out if we have that here in the supermarket. I would love to eat it too. Thanks for the ideas on how to make it.

Today do not prepare anything special, just bread with cheese and ham and a cup of coffee with milk, here the semolina is well known also makes food for children with it.

I was going to ask about polenta but your link says it is different. My kids like cream of wheat - so I wonder if they would like grits! What kind of cheese do you put in yours?
