In your opinion, what is a nice area to live near Dallas (not IN Dallas) that has a reasonable cost of living?

Well I tend to agree on Mesquite as well as Garland - both are very affordable areas to live in. But I would recommend that you stay away from Collin County - it's the most expensive county to live in - and yes unfortunately it's where we live now. The taxes are insane here!!! Hope that all goes well with your move and that you find a place you will be happy with - there are some really great areas near the DFW area!!!!

Arlington is a good option. Has everything closeby and living here isn't pricey at all.

san antonio it is not that pricey and traffic isnt all that bad well you have your normal traffic hour and so forth but it is a great place to live.
