Lights in the compound

United States

My friends and I have been dreaming. We all have said that when we are all old and retired, we'd like to live on a plot of land altogether. On this plot of land we will have tiny little house for each of us, and one big room that has a kitchen, dining area and area for television. I requested a library and my friends have readily agreed. I am sure we will also have a workshop of some sort for craft projects. On our front porches we will have fairy lights, those tiny little strands of lights that shine in yellowish white hues. I am sure we'll think of other things for us to have on this hypothetical plot of land, it's something we all enjoy doing. What does your ideal home look like?

This might sound silly, but my ideal home is right here where I live. When Mom passed away, we bought this house. It was awfully old and needed to be updated. As we make those changes, it becomes more like the home that I someday dreamed of owning:)

That doesn't sound silly at all. It sounds as if you are making that house the home that you always wanted and that is wonderful!

@ScribbledAdNauseum Jay and I put our head together and decide what we should change next. It's neat, because we only do what we can afford, at the time. There's no pressure to get it done, by a certain date or time. I love remodeling!

@kobesbuddy I like your process, that is a good way to go about it. You can decide what you want to do when, and I bet it helps you save money over all because you can plan for it far in advance.

So far I am happy where I am, but that could change. Would like to live on an island!

I have seen some very beautiful pictures of homes on an island of their own. That would be nice, wouldn't it? Just land enough for a small house and a little vegetable garden, maybe a chicken or two for laying eggs.

@CarolDM That would be great, the only noise being the sound of waves, birds and maybe a dolphin call every once in awhile.

I often dream of living somewhere different but my commitments are in the place I live now .. but who knows in the future. It doesn't hurt to dream

@ScribbledAdNauseum When Teagan leaves home I might think about moving but we are very close to her school at the moment so it's very convenient.

This is something that wouldn't happen for us for many, many years to come. If it ever does. It's nice to dream of, and it's nice to have intentions for it to come true...

You may find me corny but a little house on the prairie is my dream. I just wonder if I would have that, would my phone work?

There are lots of phone towers around now so maybe your phone would work. I don't find that corny, that is perfect.

@Alexandoy No, I had not seen that post unfortunately. I have an aunt whose husband owns 7 houses on the street they live on. Each house is occupied by either family, is being rented or is laying vacant. He has plenty of land to farm.

@ScribbledAdNauseum if you had seen my post about my niece's farm, there are still lands there that can be bought. It can be in the mountain which is cheaper. But no matter how cheap, I cannot afford to buy hectares of land.

That actually sounds so nice. Lol. I've never really thought of that, besides having one of those porches with the white fences. Like this... with a porch swing. Always wanted one.

That's a cute little house in the picture. Years ago I wanted one of those moranda style porches, that wrap around the entirety of the house. A friend of mine took some heavy duty hooks and bolted them to the ceiling of her porch and then hung a porch swing from it. The only problem with that is she had to walk out her back door to go around to the front and sit down. It was still nice.

@Courtlynn Her porch is so small and not wide enough so she had to do it that way, but yeah I wouldn't do it either. They make those swings that have their own base and you can place outside of the porch, We had one of those but they are so quick to rust.

Good question. My ideal home would be some home on the mountain, on fresh air and nature. I have beautiful terrace on the first flor. I have small house but very beautiful. I have garden with my flowers and other plants.

I love the mountains as well. I enjoy the beach, but to me the mountains are so beautiful and you feel so secluded within the mountains. All of that sounds beautiful.

@Moon24 My friends and I have said our ideal location would be close to the beach but also on a mountain. That's not geographically possible, atleast not here. Yes, I think a terrace would be lovely. A nice place to enjoy coffee or tea in the mornings.

I hope that we do too. We joke that if one of us wins the lottery we'll start by buying a large plot of land. None of us play the lottery, so it's just a joke. Peace and quiet is a good thing, I don't know if I'd be able to survive without it.

That sounds like a lovely place. I've lived in homes that have a pantry built in, but the pantry was still sort of small. I love my brother in law's kitchen, he doesn't have a pantry but there is plenty of storage. They even have one of those corner cabinets that pull out and swivel.

@FayeHazel I thought so too. I think another of our ideas is to try to live as much off the grid as we can.

With one of those wraparound, moranda style porches? That's one thing I used to dream about, a house with a big wrap around porch.
