Idea for a soft science fiction novel

Scientists try to solve the overpopulation/world hunger crises by shrinking everyone in the world down to a few inches tall. Somehow, it works. Now people must learn how to live in a world where even their own houses seem like vast cities.
I feel like this concept might have been explored already, but even if it has, I still kinda want to write it myself. Your thoughts?

That's why the title of this topic is "Idea for a soft science fiction novel" instead of "idea for a real thing that could totally happen."

Thanks for the input. Maybe watching this movie will give me some ideas for my novel.

@PeachieMew How about a miniature detective - he could specialise in small-time crooks!
