Had you heard of Kobe Bryant? Are they covering his death where you live?

Kobe Bryant was an American NBA basketball player who spent his entire 20 year career with a team called the Los Angeles Lakers. He won several championships with the Lakers, and is considered one of the best ever to play the game.
I believe he spent part of his childhood in Italy, but I'd have to check that.
Yesterday, he and eight other people (friends and family) were killed in a helicopter crash in the mountains near Los Angeles CA.
It's been all over the news here, and TV sports channels in the US are doing tributes to Kobe Bryant today.
Is his death in the news where you live? Had you even heard of Kobe Bryant before reading this post?

Living in L.A., we are hit hard about Kobe . . . many know very well who he is - regardless whether we are basketball fans or not. It's definitely all over the news here - especially since he was so integral to L.A. - oh gosh and the crash happened not too far from here.

@TheHorse It happened in Calabasas . . . near the 101 freeway - think how it is on the way to Malibu. Hilly, dry grass and shrubs. It happened to be very foggy that morning and I don't know why the pilot didn't make the stop earlier at Van Nuys airport. I heard even LAPD didn't have their copters up that morning because the fog was too thick.

@much2say I heard that too. Even if he was "instrument-rated," or whatever they call it, safety comes first. A witness said he/she heard a sputter before the crash. Could water from the fog have gotten into the engine? I have no clue.

Yes, Filipino people loves basketball too so it is normal here that people watch the local basketball plus the NBA. I learn last night that Kobe went here 6 times, the first time he went here when he was 20 years old and he was only on his 2nd year playing professionally. Kobe is one of the Filipino's favorite player

Yes, it's being covered here very much. What a sad, horrible event. I can't believe I did this but just a few minutes ago, I played the audio conversation between the pilot and the control tower.
All of the transmission was clear and easy to follow until the chopper went too low. Then all transmission stopped because there was no radio signal at that low altitude. All we could hear at that point was control trying to contact the chopper. As the communication stopped, my heart began to race. We all know what happened after that.

@TheHorse They said it was foggy. Most small plane pilots don't know how to fly on instruments.

Hubby picked me up from Whole Foods that day and the first thing he asked me was if I heard about what happened to Kobe Bryant. I told him no as I didn't go online that day nor watched the news. I was shocked when he told me what happened.

Yes. I'm a lifelong Laker fan, and Kobe ranks as my 3rd favorite all-time Laker, behind Magic and Worthy. I even got a high five from Kobe one night after they beat the Nuggets here in Denver. I'm very sad.

Kobe was my all time favorite basketball player, while he played for the LA Lakers. They were an unstoppable team and I named my dog 'Kobe' after him, I thought of him as a remarkable athleteThis was truly a terrible disaster.
