My cat loves to go out on our porch

I hate when the rain comes and I cannot let her out on the porch. I do not want her to get sick. It is open and gets very wet. My poor little Sophie sits at the door and looks out longing to go out there. I try to explain to her that she cannot go out because of the weather. I feel so bad for her. When the weather is fine she goes out. When the winter leaves us she can go out anytime she likes when I am home. Do any of you have pets that love to go out, but, because of the weather cannot and do not understand when you try to explain it to them?

No, I don't have a pet here anymore. I would let the cat out if she wants. She will return immediately if it is not nice for her. I think cats don't like to get wet.

Aw Sophie. Doodles loved going out in any weather, but hid under trees and bushes when it poured. I had to pick him up and carry him inside.

@Hannihar Doodles didn’t like thunder and no way would I let him out in that kind of weather, no matter how much he meowed!

@DianneN When my Mitzi was outside the skies were blue and no way of knowing that lightning and rain would follow. When I heard the thunder I ran out right away to scoop her up and take her in.

@DianneN One time when my other cat I had was outside and the sky was so blue but then all of a sudden the thunder and lightning happened and I heard her crying and so I rushed out to pick her up and bring her inside.

I am surprised she likes getting wet ? most cats don't and dogs usually do fine with going out a few minutes . they usually don't get sick from cold wet etc. that I ever heard of if only for short periods

Sophie is a very unique cat. She likes different things. I got her something that I called a swimming pool once but she did not like it. My dog I had did not like going out in the rain.

@Shivram59 I believe unless you live on a farm or ranch it would be very hard to have cows.

I am sure that Sophie would get the message if you opened the door to let her see for herself. Ally will want to go out when the weather is not that good but when I open the door for her she will not go out.

@rebelann I am worried she might like it so cannot let her out when raining. This morning I think it was just drizzling so when I opened the door to see what was going on she went out and came back inside.

@Hannihar There are wild animals in this area and I do not want them getting a hold of my cats. A cougar was in town last summer.

@Hannihar yes but she is a dachshund and is pad trained. Both of my dogs are. We live in an apartment. Our dogs are so low to the ground that we don't take them out much here. We are scared they might catch something from another dog.

@simone10 So instead of taking them out you put pads on them and change the pad each time they do something in it? Is that right?

When I had a cat I had the same issue. At the time I was living in a condo in Florida and she loved being on the screened in porch. It took me such an effort to get her to come inside for bedtime. Cats can be real night owls!
