But It's Just a Game! (NFL Betting)

I don't follow football, but I'm fully supportive of my friends/family who are fans. To each their own.
However, I've known fans who would feel low for a day or two after their team lost a game.
I could understand that they had their favorite teams and players; it was a disappointment. People get mentally/emotionally attached I suppose.
My husband worked with another guy who would act completely depressed for a week after his team lost! I tried to figure this out logically. I felt that the man might be psychologically unstable. I mean, he didn't know the players personally or anything.
Then I learned that he was involved in NFL betting. OH!! Duh! He lost mucho dinero! No wonder he was so depressed!
Since I didn't know much about professional football, I knew even less about the gambling thing. I still don't know much, but I've heard that some people bet very large amounts of money.
Do any of you bet on the games, either online or just among friends? Do you know people who do?

As I've got older I've become less and less emotionally attached to the team I follow (proper football, UK style!!). I think I've just matured enough to realise it isn't that important and to be honest there is really no point in forming any sort of emotional attachment to a group of multi-millionaires who will be off to another team as soon as they get a better offer.
I do have the occasional bet on sports fixtures but I definitely stick to the old adage of not betting what I can't afford to lose.

Thanks @WorDazza. Yes, I agree that maturity often comes with age. You made a good point about the multi-millionaire players too.
You have a wise approach to betting.

@WorDazza You're so right. I know a woman in her late 40's who seems very mature, responsible, has a good job, etc. It was a bit of a shock to learn that she had borrowed money from friends, family on a regular basis to make house payments, because she'd spent everything on gambling.

I don't bet no, but one time when I was in high school I placed a bet with some buys from the school. We all played the same teams but I changed one score. I won 5 euros that day and I was super happy, but the boys lost so they didn't let me in their betting group again!
In general I like sports but I don't get emotionally invested with any team.
Betting can be a catastrophic habit so it's best to stay away from temptation.

I have not bet in years. The office used to have a small pool. $2 dollars if you wanted to play. They did have bigger pools if you wanted to join.
One time the person in charge of the pool didn’t come to work for a week. He had spent the pool money, and was waiting on pay day day to pay people.
I have been lucky on the pools.

Wow @CookieMonster46, what a great example of money being an irresistible temptation!
It's great that you've had success on the pools. If I did it, I'd probably start small with the $2 pool.

We went to our clubhouse Super Bowl party where bets were placed.
My husband won some money first, but donated it back to our social committee. Everyone followed suit.
Otherwise, he never bets or gambles.
Betting large amounts of money is ridiculous, especially if one can’t afford it.

@BloggerDi You’re right. My grandmother used to travel from California to Reno, Nevada to gamble. She only allowed herself so much to spend, win or lose, and considered it entertainment. It gave her so much joy.

Great example @DianneN. Thanks!
I think gambling can be an okay form of personal entertainment, just like many other things that folks spend money on. Moderation is key in everything. We get into trouble when we don't maintain some self-control.

I do not bet on games, however, I used to have an unhealthy obsession with New Orleans Saints (my hometown team's) quarterback, Drew Brees. I loved seeing him break records and put up dominant stat lines and even hated the Saints' 2017 season (despite it being their first winning season since 2013) because I felt the team watered down his act. The following year, I finally broke free from the obsession and I am now in a position where I consider myself more or less indifferent. I wish my hometown teams well, but I am not sure I have a favorite player anymore and my world doesn't fall apart based on the outcome of a game/season.
I can't speak for the sports obsessions of others, but for me I had a lot of unresolved issues in my life leading up to my obsession and was trying to dissociate -- that is, decide that it was safer to live in my head a bit and escape into a fantasy that couldn't hurt me.
As far as betting goes, I don't know people who bet, however, I know a lot of people who are involved with fantasy football. Most of them only do it as just a fun hobby, though, and don't seem to take it too seriously.

Thanks for your honest and insightful story of becoming obsessed about a player, @skydancer.
I've had unhealthy obsessions as a form of escapism too. I think most people have struggled with that during difficult times of life.

I think most fans are like you- they just enjoy watching and don't place bets. Thanks @CarolDM.
