Now that it's official that the Philippines is no longer 2019-nCOV ARD free with the first case of a Chinese woman testing positive for the virus it's time to hike up preparations incase of a lockdown and we won't be able to go out for days, weeks or months.
Water being one of the most essential item for survival ( After air) I had decided to ramp up our mineral drinking water supply each container contains 5 gallons, yes there is also purified water in the picture for cooking ( in white containers and partly hidden)
Pardon me if my place is a bit topsy turvy cause we are getting ready and putting things in order, the 2 rice barrels also contain 20 kilos of rice each.( Part of our food prep)
Mylotters are you ready for a pandemic? Are you already making preparations , is your country one of those that already have cases?

This morning there has been confirmed two people from the same family who were staying in a hotel they are now in isolation. A rescue flight has arrived in London and they will be quarantined for 14 days. I hope that this pandemic slows down.

We have had one confirmed but she's not Filipino citizen, a Chinese national who just flew in from Wuhan they are still investigating the people she might have had contact with and that could be a lot. We are still in the process getting our people out of there, right 2 weeks quarantine is important because the disease is contagious despite being asymptomatic.
My eldest son who's only 23 is a cadet officer in an international oil and chemical tanker and they would be in China in a week or two, I advised him not to go out of the ship.

Yes , I think we have nothing to lose if we just stay always prepared pandemic or whatever calamity natural or man made that might hit us. Pasta and rice are good stuffs to store, they take up a small space and last very long. I read that pasta could be stored for 20 years or more without spoiling.

@LadyDuck maybe that's when the oil and the flour starts to break down. I have just a few ml olive oil in the house but I have quite a store of honey cause somebody brings to the house to sell from time to time and I just buy it to add to my food prep storage, the same goes with my rock sea salt, i have a lot stored.
Funny how it feels like we are in some kind of an onset of a zombie apocalypse that we only see in movies lol.

@louievill I would not dare to store pasta for so long, after three to five years I noticed that the texture is weird. Olive oil lasts almost forever as well as honey. I have 10 liters of olive oil in the basement, in a dark cool place.

Yes I had heard from my Chinese friends in the mainland and they also gave me a lot of useful tips, even how not to get bored during the lockdown plus enjoying time with family and learning new skills through the internet, congratulations for containing the virus.
During the height of the infection I had been telling them that the disease would follow a rising graph till it reaches the peak then it plateaus before it descends and hopefully disappears.

@changjiangzhibin89 I know some Chinese English teachers practice with me to speak English on Wechat , when the cases were rising, the schools asked them to prepare online lessons and lesson plans. One of my student's daughter could not take the SAT test in Hong Kong, she booked a flight for the Dubai testing center but they were also refused because of the virus

@DianneN and for us we just came out of something that was not expected like a volcano erupting and covering our city with a lot of ash and pyroclastic materials, now who would expect something like that?

I'm a practical prepper but a pandemic and the possibility of an indefinite lockdown really caught me by surprise. My preps are mostly for a typhoon and earthquakes that does not require us to " bug in "for a very long time.

@louievill I understand. You’re still wise to be prepared for any emergency.
I try to be prepared for anything, but like you, it’s for weather related reasons.

It's so sad about the virus :-( I hope you won't have to use the essentials , but wise to store it up.
Does water stay good when stored?

I hope I won't have to use it too but better too have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
The ones in the blue containers are mineral and or alka water that we consume on a daily basis, it's our drinking water so three of those are consumed in less than a week depending on climate. I doubled the order from 3 containers to 6.
The ones in white ( hidden and I have more) are for cooking and other purposes, they are rotated every 6 months. Water should be rotated every six months, they should be kept in good quality containers and stored in a cool dry and dark place to prevent algae growth, I disinfect with unscented bleach after 6 months.

@FayeHazel in a real dire apocalyptic scenario we should also have the knowledge as well as the capbility to purify and filter real dirty water irregardless of source and in some cases to desalinate it. Storing more of these containers would prolong the time I would need to go look for other sources and although I have knowledge tools to turn it drinkably safe, I find it a little bit yucky
Going out to look for water might also prove risky and dangerous because those who did not prepare might be guarding the source or some big guy might be controlling it.

@YrNemo water should be rotated, 6 months at the most, containers if I plan to refill I sanitize with a bleach solution. Drinking water is not something you store and forget you were preparing for the millenial bug ?

@louievill My husband bought lots of drinking water back in 1999, before the New Year 2000. They are still in the shed . I plan to water the garden with them all eventually.

We are nearer ground zero being in Asia, although there are no Filipinos yet in the Philippines who are infected, there had already been 2 deaths and another confirmed case who got well, all are Chinese who travelled directly from the center Wuhan.
I had been a practical prepper since I can remember but a pandemic and a lockdown scenario needs more supplies than what we usually prepare for like a typhoon or an earthquake, it has to be months of provisions incase it becomes unsafe to go out or if stores close down

@averygirl72 the earlier you prepare I guess would be more advantageous. What I do is watch pandemic prep videos and modify it to suit our situation. I also made a checklist on what to buy and keep increasing the number of days we could stay at home without outside contact. In case no pandemic happens , the supplies would still be there ready to be consumed.

Australia has at least 9 positive, Nepal has one so far, pretty scary but let's not let it affect what we are doing, we just need to be ready and take the necessary precautions WHO advises.

I hope it wont get worst too, really scary. Good that you have a months grocery. We usually always have days of food and water emergency supply incase of an emergency like typhoons and the latest volcanic eruption but I think a pandemic lockdown like what is happening in China could last for months that's why I'm adding to what we already have.

@porwest it would just be there for the next typhoon or volcanic eruption lol. Water in containers like those stay good for up to 6 months, I'm a practical prepper and I always have preparations for natural calamities, it's just that a pandemic with lock down type or a financial collapse type that might ensue would last longer so Im multiplying the preps that I presently have as much as I can until the threat is over.

Always that is true, I'm a practical prepper but a pandemic and a lock down was not exactly at the top of my list so I had to add more supplies. It only comes to show that we really need to be prepared for every scenario the best we can.
