A Nepali band and the coronavirus

The photo doesn’t have much to do with the discussion but is a collage of photos from the Nepali Hindu wedding we attended recently. Can you see the huge, upcurved instruments? When played, they sounded like elephants bellowing. They were only used at the beginning and end of the ceremonies. I’ll add a short clip of them playing at the arrival of the bridegroom’s party. What I really wanted to write about was the huge impact the coronavirus is having in Nepal, not so much – yet – because of the illness itself but because of the impact on business. Our guesthouse owner said he has normally 80 to 90% capacity during January/February which is when the Chinese flood into Nepal on holidays. However, all bookings have been cancelled. I guess he will have to lay off staff too. And he says it is the same throughout Pokhara. There are dozens of new buildings almost finished in Pokhara and the owners would be counting on Chinese tourists to fill these during the coming months. To increase the difficulties, ‘horde’s’ of Nepalese will be returning from China where apparently many have been working. They’ll be coming back to a country that has no employment opportunities. Heaven knows where this will all end. We leave for Lumbini early tomorrow and again I’m not sure if we’ll have wifi. We’ve certainly been lucky so far.

I think that most of the tourist places are suffering because of the Chinese virus. There is a store not far from here (a luxury outlet) that lived on Chinese tourists who came here to buy.

Chinese tourists are just buying something else. There is no more a mask available in a pharmacy in Paris, they have been all bought by Chinese tourists to use back in China. The funny thing is that they are made in China but unavailable there for Chinese now. So China sells masks to France, and France sells them to Chinese tourists. That's globalization at its best.

@topffer I have two big boxes at home that I bought a few years ago. Should I go to that outlet and... Should be Italy I surely could.

Wow, yes, the Nepalese wedding! It all looks very colourful and interesting :) Hope you had fun. Yes, sadly, Coronavirus is wreaking havoc with global business. So it's sad that those people will be so negatively impacted when they don't have much to start with.

@JudyEv That's heartbreaking. We just heard the five suspected cases here were found to be negative, luckily for us.

@JudyEv I don't any more. I read it years ago and they made a movie out of it too. It was about a virus covering over the world and good and evil making a stand. very scary end of the world sort of thing.

These instruments look a bit and probably sound like carnyx, a trump used by Celts at war. Here a restitution in Switzerland with the sound.

@JudyEv Carnyx had various sizes, giving different musical notes, I remember an attempt to write music for several carnyx.

That's definitely sad! Especially when tourism is their main source of earning. Corona virus sure is having a global impact not only as spreading infection but also on business. We too have tickets booked for our vacation to Thailand and we might have to cancel it

I hope the flu will die out pretty soon, those of the past always have. I don't know if I could get used to that kind of music, there doesn't seem to be any harmony in it.

Ouch, that is a big blow to their tourism industry. Defin5there will be families that would go hungry because even if the virus vanishes, it will take time before tourism would be back to normal.

@JudyEv this is really worrying for the financial health worldwide. I believe that China is such a huge power in terms of finance that so many countries are relying on China for trade and tourism.

Yes, the music could be loud yet rhythmic! Corona virus is making a huge global impact. Chinese travel a lot to many countries. The impact on the Nepalese tourism would indeed be quite high.
