How a small gesture can make a big difference

The other day, I was driving and came to a stop sign. A middle-aged man was standing on the curb, trying to decide whether to cross now, or let me clear. I gave him a quick wave and he proceeded into the crosswalk. As he crossed, he waved back at me. There were no smiles, or displays of surprise. Just two slightly older guys doing the right thing. It put me in a good mood for the rest of the day. Do small things change your mood during the day?

Yes, it changes my mood if I run into a polite or happy person.

My "neutral" is pretty positive. But such events make me even happier.

The other day my neighbor pulled my trash cans from the curb and left them at the top of my driveway. It was such a thoughtful gesture and made me so happy.

Is there a penalty for leaving them by the curb? Or was it just so you wouldn't have to do it?

There needs to more of that kind of kindness in this world . I let someone ahead of me in line at the grocery check out - not a big deal but that person seemed appreciative of it.

@TheHorse Isn't it great when the world can be so nice-nice to each other like this? I think more of this is in order - I wish more people would think of this .

@much2say I think hurt leads to anger. As John Prine sings, "Do you see strangers/as potential dangers/trying to steal/your aimless love."

I've done that too. I've also had others do it to me when they see I have only one item.

I’m old, too, so I’m gonna let people out in traffic or let people cross at the crosswalk (it’s not only courteous, it’s the law!).

I'm always good to pedestrians. If I see them.

That’s very kind of you. I always do the same, but my mood is always steady - happy and content.

I like to say nice things to people all the time, if I am in a grocery store and see someone that has on a pretty blouse, I always try to tell them how pretty it is,and it makes that person feel good

And sometimes little things wreck the mood, such as when someone comes after me with hand sanitizer...

@TheHorse I don't use it either. I went to a community dinner where they stationed people at the door with hand sanitizers, and I went straight through but one person tried calling me back. I was halfway across the room already. I refused it and she asked "Did you wash your hands?" I felt insulted.

@TheHorse I get upset when someone cut the line in front of you knowing that he has a long operation at the bank or a cart full at the supermarket. Rude!

I enjoy it when they occur. When the opposite happens, I am able to "blow it off."

@TheHorse I also hope I don't get shot tomorrow, but being that our team is in the final day of our paintball tournament, there's a pretty good chance I'll get all shot to hell. lol

This reminds me of the way I teach children to cross the street. I teach them to wave at the car at the stoplight and make sure they wave back so they see them.
