Giving to students

Being a high school teacher can definitely stress you out and make you crazy. It also makes you smile and laugh throughout the work day as well. I find myself giving things to students all the time. . . most often pens and pencils. I often have a snack of fruit in the middle of the morning while my students are working on something. I have strawberries, cantaloupe, pineapple, watermelon, etc. When one particular student comes in each day and sees that I have some fruit left he asks if I'm done with it and if he can have it. I always give it to him. I don't know if food is an issue at his home but I do know that the kid is always hungry. Today a student needed $20. I said that all I had was $1 and the student took it. I have no idea what he needed it for. I don't care if it was for somethiing super-important or just cookies at lunch in the cafeteria. It was just $1 to me but clearly it was something more to that teenager. My kids make me nuts but they also make me smile and laugh so it all balances out.

While those teenagers are at school, you are an important part of their extended family:) They deserve to be treated with kindness and respects, exactly how you are doing it!

@NJChicaa They are similar to your kitten 'Charlie.' All grown up on the outside, but still a child, on the inside!

@NJChicaa How much are $20 there? I would not have asked a teacher that amount ever.

@marguicha That was definitely a lot to ask for. I almost never have cash which is why I had only $1

There is a connection that just pulls at us. I would probably not do the $20 for fear they were getting something illegal.

$20? I wouldn't think they were for cookies. You are a kind teacher.

That is really kind of you. I had a teacher who every day during class would eat a big bag of m&ms. The entire year he wouldn’t even give me one

You are a sweet teacher! I wonder if the student that asks for fruit is having some troubles at home. I believe there is financial assistance the student could join for free lunch and qualify for some benefits?

We do have free lunch at school and he may get it. I don't know. He is always hungry when he gets to my class (before lunch) so I always give him whatever I have.

It must take a lot of energy to teach teenagers, I know I could not do it.

You're a good teacher. I remember not bonding with most anyone when I was a kid. I would not have dared ask for fruit from a teacher. I'm glad your students have that kind of trust and rapport.

@NJChicaa Some of the kids in my area are small time hoods. I admire any teacher who deals with them each and every day.

I always gave to my students, too. Most of mine were needy. It’s what teachers do.

I think spending time with your students while doing the job you love, it makes giving unconditionally—be it material or by sharing your knowledge is what most teachers do. My sister is a teacher like you and she just couldn’t watch while her students need something especially if she could help out in her own simple ways.
