Because the acid jazz I'm finding on vinyl is very expensive, I am rebuilding my acid jazz collection on CD, just as it was before. Yesterday, my copy of the Emperors New Clothes' 1996 debut album, Unsettled Life, arrived in the mail. Led by multi-instrumentalist Andy Knight, Emperors New Clothes resided on the Acid Jazz label's roster during the genre's 1990's heyday, released two boffo studio albums and a live album, and then seemingly disappeared. The band looked more like a bunch of jam band hippies than a jazz group, and were clearly influenced by dub as much as jazz. The result was a trippy, near-hypnotic brand of jazz, really cool, groovy stuff, perfect stoner music for stoner people. Unsettled Life is brilliant, just six songs, each pure, ride-the-mindway groove. Recorded at the Acid Jazz studios in 1992, Unsettled Life was released in the United States on the Hollywood Records label. This is now the second time I have owned this. Utterly fantastic.
