Alex Made Me Do It

It's all the fault of @alexandoy. He made me do it. He was talking about something that sounded strange and awful at the same time. Banana ketchup. At first thought, I was thinking how could you even compare something like this to traditional tomato ketchup? I mean come on. Bananas? Really? Bananas? So I decided to go onto Amazon, figuring I would likely find it there. And sure enough they had it, so I bought a bottle. It arrived yesterday, I popped the cap, and had a taste. It was surprisingly delicious! I definitely can see myself dipping fries or tater tots in this. It definitely would be a good substitute for barbeque sauce to change things up a bit when summer comes and I can get the grill fired up again. It would make a great addition to a braise sauce. I don't think this will be my last bottle.

Banana ketchup is a staple in every Filipino home, from the poorest to the most well to do. It would sound weird to other cultures until you taste it. Filipinos prefer banana over tomato although we have both at home. Banana beats tomato anytime when it come to nutrients. I believe you when you say it won't be your last bottle

It was definitely surprisingly good. I would never have thought of it, but since Alex mentioned it so many times I just had to try it, and I was glad that I did.

@hereandthere I would definitely say I prefer tomato ketchup over banana ketchup, but it is good for a little change-up now and then.

That sauce is quite strange, but if you already tried it and it turned out to be delicious I would also dare to buy it.

I wonder if it is made with banana peppers, not the banana that we know.

That's a good question. I'd have to read the ingredients list. I do think it does say on the bottle sweetened with bananas though.

@porwest This was a post from. 2020. Do you still have that bottle of banana ketchup, or have you bought more since that first time?

I have to admit it was surprisingly good. I still prefer tomato ketchup over it, but it is nice to have around for a little change-up every now and then.

@moffittjc I have an unopened bottle in my overflow cabinet downstairs. I should actually go and get it and use it up. The ONLY reason I won't likely buy it again is because it's so darn expensive. I have yet to find any in the regular store and the last time I bought it, it ran about $10 on Amazon and while it's good, it's not $10 a bottle good.

I got it via Amazon. But I BET I can get it at a store I go to often when I am in West Allis (my old hometown) called Parthenon Foods. They are more Greek oriented there. Worst case there is another place in West Milwaukee near Miller Park called Cermaks that is an international grocer I could probably find a bottle of it there.

@just4him That's where I got mine. It was a little over $10, so a little pricey. I am sure I could probably find it in an international grocery store cheaper now that I know what it is and know that I like it.

@Hannihar Me too. It is always fun to try new things and spice things up a bit. I'd not have known a thing about it had @alexandoy mentioned it in one of his discussions.

No. It actually has a bit of a unique flavor. Kind of difficult to describe actually. I'd say something kinda like barbeque sauce, but NOT barbeque sauce. MAYBE a hint of a ketchup like flavor but not ketchup. It's different, but it IS good. I don't taste banana in it at all actually.

I have no idea actually. I imagine it probably has just as much sugar content as tomato ketchup, but I don't know.

It's nice to have a second recommendation for such a strange-sounding sauce.

I am actually quite amazed it is as good as it is. When @alexandoy first mentioned it I was like WHAT? Banana ketchup? It just sounded horrible. But after he further explained what it was, I just HAD to try it and I KNEW Amazon would have it. Is it worth the $10 I paid for it? Nope. BUT, there are a few places I can think of I can go and probably find it for much cheaper now that I know what it is and know that I do like it.

You have got to try it. You can get it on Amazon. I did not think it would be something I would care for, and then I tried it, and now I am hooked.
