Elephants - never forgotten

Perched in the north aisle of St Nicholas church in Wickham, Berkshire, England there are these curious elephant heads. Made of paper mâché they were installed by a 19th century priest who had seen them in Paris and moved them to his church. I find them rather gloomy and certainly once seen they are not forgotten.

Elephant heads in an English church would certainly seem out of place.

I don't like them at all. They add spookiness to an already creepy church.

Not al lot, although elephants never forget of course. They killed dragons by stamping on them, so there's an allusion to good and evil in the symbolism.
