Basically, peace of mind.
the word literally means 'by the book' (and the first Christians were called 'people of the book').
As everybody in your religion goes 'by the book (of your religion),' it's easy to know who's right.

I believe that religion has various purposes. Some may purport that religion is a means of control for the masses. For some, it is their moral rule book. For others, the purpose of religion is to seek guidance in life, to find their own purpose. It really depends on the faith and the person/people who follow it.
