One of our Daughters is Under Coronavirus Quarantine!

Last night, one of our daughters called us to let us know that she, her husband, and their son are all under house quarantine because of the coronavirus! We were shocked, although she assured us they are all OK. Apparently, the father of a student at our grandson's school in Westchester County, New York has been hospitalized with the coronavirus. He could have been spreading it for weeks, because he was exposed on a trip several weeks ago, but only became sick now. His family, including his children, tested positive, so they could have been spreading it, too. As a result, the school has been shut down for a deep cleaning and all the students and their parents have been told to stay home. They live in a charming small town just a short train ride from Manhattan, New York. Our daughter runs a bookkeeping business from home for several clients in Manhattan. They can email their data to her, so she can stay home as long as necessary. Our son-in-law works for a Manhattan company. His employer told him to stay home until the quarantine is over. He can do some of his work from home, so he is doing fine, as well. Our grandson is just happy to have some time out of school! Our daughter assured us that they have plenty of food and everything else they need to stay home for a week or two. If they need anything, they can order it. They all feel fine. The only inconvenience was that they had to postpone our grandson's birthday party until he and his classmates are done with their quarantine. Since two of our other daughters are California school teachers, and our fourth daughter has children in school, I worry that this will not be the last quarantine our family will see. I am just encouraging them to be prepared! In fact, I am writing an article for my Baby-Boomer-Retirement. com blog to to post this weekend which will help other people know how to prepare. I want to keep my friends, family and readers safe!

@NJChicaa - Yes, I agree. Before they get this disease under control, there will be hundreds of thousands of people who will be under quarantine. I am stocking up on supplies so I can minimize our trips to the grocery store if things get worse.

@NJChicaa - It is smart to stock up a little bit. Our daughter lives in a small town and the quarantine was completely unexpected. I guess we never know what can change our world upside down!

I am sure your daughter and her family are fine and I hope that in a couple of weeks this will only be an unpleasant memory. Keep safe Deborah, because too many people are irresponsible and they do not stop when they suspect to be sick.

@DeborahDiane I am prepared, even should we not get contaminated, I want to be ready to stay at home if I hear that more people around us are contaminated.

@LadyDuck - Yes, I am doing the same thing. We live in a retirement community. If our neighbors start getting sick, I want to be able to stay home comfortably. I think that is just wise. Because the weather is usually nice here, I feel like I will still be able to take walks around the neighborhood, sit on the patio, and do similar things.

@LadyDuck - I agree. Anyone who thinks they may be sick should stay home. I have been stocking up on food and other supplies. We are fine. No one near us has been diagnosed with it. However, I want to be prepared in case we face a surprise quarantine, too!

Oh that is the first time that I hear stories from a fellow Mylotter that they have a love one infected with the CoVid virus. I do hope and pray that they will recover from it soon As many are saying that the recovery rate is really high except that it infects fast. Doing the quarantine will help stop the spreading.

That quarantine for potential infection is one good precaution to control the spread of the virus. But when you are quarantined for 14 days, it is like being in prison unless it is a home quarantine.

@Alexandoy - Yes, being quarantined at home is not as bad as it was for the people who have been quarantined on cruise ships and military bases. At least they have all their own things, plenty of space and a back yard they can sit in on nice days.

@DeborahDiane I am sorry about your daughter. That is happening. I read this morning about it going to New York. I am glad she can do her work at home. That virus is really recking lives. What a shame that the party had to be postponed, but, better to be safe than sorry. That must be hard for you. Great idea to write that article.

@Hannihar - Right now, our daughter and her family are doing fine. They are not sick. However, Westchester County, which is just north of Manhattan and is the county where they live, has been hit pretty hard. A rabbi is very sick with it, and his synagogue has been closed for a couple of weeks. A school district near where our daughter lives has also been closed down, now. I hope my family can continue to avoid this coronavirus, but they are living in a hot spot.

@DeborahDiane I am glad your daughter and her family are doing fine, but, not happy to read about the Rabbi. Here in Israel they tell people to quarantine themselves for about 2 weeks in their homes. Good thing the Synagogue is closed, but, not good if the congregants want to celebrate our holiday of Purim which is today there in the Synagogue. This year the holiday is quieter and that virus is the cause of it.

@changjiangzhibin89 - I'm glad to hear about the precautions they are taking in China. I just saw a news story about the ways they are protecting people who are grocery shopping in China. They showed a Costco with people wearing masks and gloves, being told to take prepared food outside the store to eat, and keeping people a meter apart. Great ideas.

It's horrible to hear that they have been quarantined, but it's also great at the same time, because it means people are taking this pandemic seriously and are taking necessary steps to be safe, and to keep the community safe. I hope all is well with them, and that they maintain their health during and after the quarantine.

@moffittjc - Since this was written, that part of my family is no longer under formal quarantine, but now they are just under "stay home" orders, which effectively is the same thing. In fact, our entire family lives in states where we are being told to stay home. We've spent a lot of time on the phone! LOL

They have a comfortable home and back yard, with a charming front porch. I'm sure they will be fine, as long as none of them get sick. I'm glad they are following the rules. Are they having similar problems in Australia? I have heard there were some cases there, but I haven't heard the details.

@JudyEv - It sounds like it has not hit Australia too hard. I am glad to hear that. I agree about how technology helps. It is nice to be able to talk on the phone with our daughter, and even video chat with her. She is also posting pictures on Facebook, and all her family and friends are able to see how they are doing. It must have been horrible back 100 years ago when people were quarantined, and they could not communicate with their friends and family.

@DeborahDiane At least with all the technology we have nowadays, people in quarantine will not normally be completely cut off from their friends and family. In Australia, there is one school that is closed and a few in quarantine. A few businesses have also closed because of an infected employee.

The quarantine is a good solution for everyone who might have been in contact with the patients. I hope your family will be safe, is your grandson in the same class with the child? I was reading that children rarely get the corona virus and the symptoms are not as severe.

@besweet - Yes, it is true that children rarely get very sick from the coronavirus. However, this man's children have tested positive for the virus. The doctor who treated the man, the man's rabbi at his synagogue and a neighbor of the family have also tested positive for the virus. Their whole town is now under quarantine. Hopefully, no one else will test positive for it. Our grandson did know one of the children of the man. I do not know if they were in the same class.

@DeborahDiane I am, but before the "craze" hit, I was working with 2-year-olds at a friend's preschool. I'm a child psychologist and have littlies climbing on me all the time. The one guy decided to sneeze without covering his mouth (in February) and I actually felt something liquid hit the back of my throat. It was"gross" but I didn't get sick. For the past 1.5 months, I've been a relative recluse.

@TheHorse - I think that most of us have been virtual recluses here in California for the past six weeks. I walk with friends, but only keeping several feet apart and walking in relatively deserted locations. Other than my morning walks, and going to the grocery store once or twice a week, my husband and I are not going anywhere. We are cooking all our meals at home. My husband almost never leaves the house. He has some serious underlying conditions, so he is being particularly careful.

I hope you are also minimizing your contact with other people, as much as possible.

Hi, it is so nice to see that you are still here. I am still tutoring online but have been thinking of friends here and am finding time to check in. I am sorry to hear abut that quarantine, but New York has so many cases, I am not surprised. I hope that all is well with you and your whole family now. Oregon has many cases too, but we are okay here in Eugene and my daughter in Portland is staying home and being very cautious. I hope there are not too many cases close to you.

Hi Jim! It is good to see you are still around, too. Both of our daughters who are teachers have suddenly and unexpectedly become "online tutors," too. I have thought a few times about doing what you are doing, too, but I am not ready to take it on right now. All four of our daughters are now staying home with their families. All of them and their spouses are working from home. None have become unemployed, although the self-employed bookkeeper daughter in New York has lost some clients. They all have children, and all of their children are staying with them ... even the grandkids who are in their early 20s. It is a relief to me to know that they are all together and staying as safe as possible. My husband and I are being careful, too. With all his health problems, this disease would be fatal. There are not many cases, yet, in Orange County, but we are bracing for them. We expect our numbers to increase over the next month. It is very scary. We're hanging in here OK, and hope you and your wife are, too. This is a good time to be retired! Best wishes to you and your super creative, quilter wife!

@DianneN - Yes, I agree that more people will be under quarantine soon. Remember Elizabeth Wallace who used to write here? She had pneumonia and sepsis in January, so she has been very sick and is slowly recovering. She has really stocked up so she does not have to go out any more than absolutely necessary. The last thing she needs is to pick up a virus of any kind. Most of the rest of us are just practicing reasonable protective measures. My daughter was shocked to be quarantined. It made me realize that it could happen to any of us, without warning.

@paigea - My daughter and her family were negative. They finished their official "quarantine" because of their exposure, just in time to fall under the "shelter-at-home" orders. So, it is just the same as the quarantine, except our daughter is allowed to go to the grocery store, as needed. So far, everyone in our family has stayed healthy, although we do have one friend who caught Covid-19, spent 5 days in the hospital, and recovered. He said it was awful. We are glad he survived
