No wonder they call them stealerships!

I took my car to the dealership to have a recall repair done. They did an inspection on it and found a very extensive list of other things that needed to be done, including adjusting the rear brakes and replacing the brake shoes, flushing every fluid in the car, replacing the gasket on the timing cover, replacing the tensioner pulley, replacing the serpentine belt, and replacing one of the CV axles. The total amount of the quote they gave me was over $4,000. Thursday I got it in to my mechanic's shop to have the CV axle replaced. They inspected it and found that the ball joint on that side needed to be replaced, too. The rear brakes did need adjustment, but the shoes and drums are fine. The fluids don't need to be flushed, the timing cover gasket is barely seeping so that isn't something we need to worry about yet, the tensioner pulley looked good, and the guy laughed when I asked about the "excessively cracked" serpentine belt. He also said that my front brake pads looked great but the rotors need to be replaced. The estimate for all the work we had done on it was just under $1,000 and included everything but the rotors because that's easy enough to do ourselves. The final total came to $840, just over 1/5th of the price the dealership quoted us.

I find that quite criminal behaviour really. It's downright dishonest.

It really is! I wasn't impressed with this dealership anyway (they never once returned my calls about the airbag recall repair they needed to do) but that really sealed it for me. My next car will most likely be that brand but the dealership four hours away will get my business.

@JudyEv Yep. If that's how their service department handles things, I'd hate to see their sales department in action. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, maybe that high quote was their way of "encouraging" me to start considering a new car...

Always best to have an alternative qualified mechanic on hand. Dealerships will rake you over the coals, as you found. It's highway robbery, really.

It really is, and probably only hurts their bottom line in the end. I don't know many people who would go back for more after having a quote inflated like that.

@lynnwrites I am not so sure. I know it may be controversial. But people are stupid. It's why payday loan stores have so much business.

@porwest Ugh, that's unfortunately very true. Payday loans haven't been legal here since 2010, but the payday loan stores were very quickly replaced with title loan stores, which are even worse because something like one in five people who take out title loans end up having their cars repossessed by the lender. No idea why those are actually legal here. Guess some lobbyist found the right pockets to line to push that one through.

It is. It's just sad that it's necessary to get a second opinion for things like this.
