People are continuing to be in a sheer panic over the Coronavirus, fueled mainly by the media. I still stand by my assertion that this is a major, major overreaction, and as a result of the REACTION many people are needlessly being put into more panic and being hurt.
I write this as my wife went into work her part time job at the pharmacy for our local grocery store and she called me to say that people are yelling and screaming and fighting over food and completely wiping the store out.
This is MADNESS!!!
So, to offer a little bit of perspective I am going to offer the numbers as they are this moment and will try to include some of the countries I know I have seen active here.
UNITED STATES
3,324 CASES, 63 DEATHS
SERBIA
48 CASES, 0 DEATHS
UNITED KINGDOM
1,375 CASES, 35 DEATHS
GERMANY
5,813 CASES, 12 DEATHS
AUSTRALIA
299 CASES, 5 DEATHS
CANADA
255 CASES, 1 DEATH
SINGAPORE
226 CASES, 0 DEATHS
ISRAEL
200 CASES, 0 DEATHS
PHILIPPINES
140 CASES, 12 DEATHS
INDIA
110 CASES, 2 DEATHS
RUSSIA
63 CASES, 0 DEATHS
MEXICO
41 CASES, 0 DEATHS
VENEZUELA
10 CASES, 0 DEATHS
If I have left anyone out and you want to know the numbers, just let me know. I can get them.
Again, I should stress that I do not think people should NOT do anything and not take ANY precautions. But these numbers also do not represent anything that should be causing mass hysteria either.

I agree that it is pure madness....I am not doing anything differently myself....just normal precautions in hopes to not catch ANY virus!

@MommyOfEli2013 Sure would be nice. Even today my brother in law said he went to the grocery store and they were out of meat. It's just ridiculous.

@NJChicaa That science degree should also be telling you that in the past, with pretty much all viruses...
Warmer. Weather. Kills. Viruses.
This will be over before you know it. But hey. It's all good. People have stocked up on eggs. They can spread plenty of it on their faces real soon.

What about Spain and Italy? I'd like to see those figures. People with compromised immune systems DO need to be concerned as do us "older folks". We are prepared to stay home for a couple of weeks and, yes, we have toilet paper!

@porwest Wow Italy certainly is in bad shape. That's a real shame.

@LindaOHio They lacked appropriate response from the beginning. It's part of the reason they are going through what they are going through. SINCE Italy HAS ramped up efforts, the numbers are not rising as quickly now. Same thing with China. Both are seeing a heading off of additional cases and deaths.

Spain has 7,798 cases and 292 deaths. Italy is doing far worse and seems to be second to China with 24,747 cases and 1,809 deaths. I think the problem both in China and Italy is lack of action and containment early on. In the countries where measures were taken the numbers are far less.

Our kids' school decided to cancel classes on Saturday. I think the governor decided that all schools should be closed as of yesterday.
The numbers from South Korea have been the most interesting to me so far. They seem to be doing a lot more extensive testing, which is identifying a lot of mild and asymptomatic cases. The infection rate seems to be way higher than most are reporting, which means the mortality rate is lower. The real problem is that it's so darn contagious and if everyone keeps carrying on as normal there's a possibility that the severe cases could overwhelm healthcare facilities.
Unfortunately, the measures being put in place to slow the spread of the virus are being taken as cause to panic when that's really not necessary.

@porwest The numbers are definitely being under reported. The number of testing kits is limited, and in a lot of cases they're refusing to test people unless their symptoms are very severe. People are being told "yeah, you probably have it, but we can't waste the test on you when someone who might be dying of their symptoms could need it."
I have a sneaking suspicion that the "weird cold" that went through my kids' school at the beginning of the month was actually Covid-19 because so many of the symptoms match up. Nobody thought much of it because it seemed like a really mild cold, and the general rule for excluding students tends to be having a fever or vomiting. A lot of the South Korean testing has shown that fever isn't necessarily present.
And then there's the monkey see, monkey do stuff. Everyone sees people hoarding things and decides they need to hoard things, too, without really stopping to think about what they might actually need.

Yes it causes mass hysteria as the corona virus is fueled by media. The checkpoints because of lockdown here is not effective as it crowded more people

It's the MSM that is causing all of the hysteria. We went out today to get some toilet paper (we have six rolls) and there was NONE.

I do believe that there are some people that are panicked. My doctors have told me to stay home because of my lowered immune system. I am following there directions. I do think that there is no need to empty the grocery store shelves or get into fights with other shoppers.

Yes. Definitely. If you have a compromised immune system, you are certainly in the "at risk" category, so staying home for you is a good idea. If people CAN stay home, that might be a good idea as well just to prevent unnecessary spread of the virus. But this panic and this hoarding HAS to end.
