I think everyone agrees that we are all going a little overboard...

However, it's like a chain reaction. Even the most calm and sensible of us are jumping up and grabbing what we can of food. My aunt called me just a while ago to tell me that the Gov. Roy Cooper (NC's governor) is closing all restaurants at five. Now, my family and I go twice a week to a restaurant. I called the restaurant and as of right now they say that they will be able to serve us, but we have to be out by five. The Gov. will be addressing NC at 2 pm. Trump is speaking now, and I'll be honest, I don't care to listen to him at the moment. I'll get the gist of what he said from family later. Well, I rushed to the store and grabbed some food items that we would need, and let me tell you, the store was very busy. I only intended to spend $70, but I ended up spending $36 over that amount... It's better to be prepared, because while grocery stores are supposed to stay open, there are a lot of people going out and wiping the shelves clean because of this hysteria.. I'll admit I'm trying not to let this hysteria get to me. What are you doing to distance yourself from the craziness?

I am afraid the stores have been letting people buy whatever they want which is stupid. Knowing there was a supply problem caused by people buying multiple things they should have put limits on things for example maximum of 2 items of the same thing so for example no one would get to buy more than 48 toilet rolls. Now they are like gold dust. Man cannot live on toilet rolls alone! A non biblical saying!

That is exactly what happened here. The stores didn't anticipate this happening - and the limits started after the fact. So even if you could only buy 2 of whatever, there weren't even 2 things on that shelf! I bought stuff keeping in mind this could happen - and it did happen - but I sure didn't hoard like many are still doing. The lines here are still insane. Hope you have your toilet paper !

They have NOW started putting limits on toilet paper and paper towels as well as water. All other things seem to have no limit at the moment. Yes, places like ebay and amazon are selling toilet roll at exorbitant prices now. Charmin has a multi-family roll which is supposed to last a month, I looked online and even it is sold out.

Until today I wasn't overly worried and so far have done absolutely nothing whatsoever different than I'd normally do. Today I talked to the big manager and apparently all of our jobs are now at risk so now I am worried and also very pissed off at people going and wiping the shelves clean of certain items when they do not need them. The main thing I am doing is not reading any more news!!!...they're scaremongering and getting people worked up. Here if you didn't read/watch the news you'd not know anything was happening except for certain items not being available in shops.

We have one of three networks always on here.. CNN, MSNBC or Fox News. It doesn't matter what channel we turn it to, the virus is pretty much all they talk about. We had a Democratic Debate a few days ago and that got two hours of coverage and then back to the virus. As far as I know places like supermarkets are okay but waitresses are going to be suffering, bartenders are going to be suffering.. I think Trump has claimed he will give ever American $1000. Not sure if that's every working American or just everyone over 18, but I'll believe it when I see it.

It may not be where you live Mike but it is absurd here the shelves look like an old USSR supermarket. Nothing on them apart from Capers or anchovies and other such things non essential things!

@garymarsh6 I live by tesco and sainsburys metro and the only things not there are dried pasta and toilet roll. Plenty of other tinned stuff and everything else is pretty much normal. I have not bought anything I wouldn't have otherwise bought but will need loo roll soon which is no problem as my local corner shop has plenty as of last night and plenty of other stuff tooall at the same price as it used to be. From what I've heard some of the bigger supermarkets have been hit quite hard in my city.

Similar things are happening here as well with the closing of restaurants, bars and all non essential buisness. It's inconvenient but probably wise to keep the virus from spreading.

I agree that it's probably wise. I saw a mix of people in the store today. Those who seemed to be panicking, and those who seemed to be happy with going on about their day. I saw two men standing and chatting with one another, not keeping a distance.

What am I doing to distance myself from the craziness? Simply not being a part of it. I did read an article the other day that TRIED to explain at least some of the panic buying, including that of silly items like toilet paper. It suggested than when people feel OUT of control, buying stuff like this makes feel more BACK in control of at least SOMETHING. I suppose in that way it makes SOME sense. But the whole thing is still just madness to me.

I've had to just turn off the news here for the most part, because it had me feeling a little hysterical today. I'm not above admitting that, though now I feel a little silly for it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum You would not be alone in that. Trust me. I mean, even if you have a level head about it, all of this constant reporting of gloom and doom is going to eventually have at least SOME affect on even the most common sense minded people.

I think you can't avoid feeling that way especially when you are surrounded by people who are grabbing anything at hand. I just hope that medicines and medical supplies would not run out.
• United States
18 Mar 20
I am sure we are going to have to deal with medicines being harder to come by, and as a result, more expensive.

I did sort of go overboard in that I got cans and stuff that I don't normally use... I'm trying not to freak out and remind myself that this is bad, but it's not as bad as the media is making it out to be.

We've been throwing a couple of extra packets and tins in the trolley when we shop. Nothing overboard. I'm halfway to work and my bus is practically empty. Normally by now it's standing room only. It's all rather surreal.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I am! The government hasn't officially said that schools and other educational establishments can close yet, so some places are just taking it into their own hands and making the decision themselves, primarily due to staff shortage. However, as of 4:30 this afternoon no students where I work will be coming in, and staff are just working till the end of the week, mostly to get the online learning set up. Then we work from home next week. Literally just had a Breaking News notification that Boris and his mates are about to make a live announcement on school closure!

See. Everyone sees everyone going to the stores and buying alot of stuff as part of the crazy. But really, most of them / us are just trying to do our normal shopping. And have to get alot to make sure we can get what we need unlike the people buying just because they're freaking out.

I'm honestly not buying into it, I have stuff at home but I'm not hoarding it and I wouldn't have the money to do so anyway. The media is freaking people out so bad. The restaurants around here is all still open but the town is so small we only have 7 restaurants.

17 Mar 20
The restaurants can do take out only now. I was talking to our favorite waitress and she is trying to stay positive but I know it's going to cut into her living expenses.

I'm glad you got your stuff! I'm not panicking - but using that energy to get prepared. People are still going nuts here, but now some stores are opening earlier just for seniors (but it's so early for these people and they still have to wait in line). And some stores are getting a system down in letting a certain # of people in at a time and limiting what they can get. Our household is ok for a while - but at some point we will have to get fresh supplies (like everyone else) - we are researching online options now (which I'm sure is its own issues at this time). I have to think of my parents as well (I shop for them, but I/we are not stepping into their house). Stay healthy and take care out there!
