Guava for vitamin C

The birds here have a strong immunity to diseases because they have a steady supply of vitamin C courtesy of our guava tree in the front yard. Most of the times, they are ahead of me in the harvest although lately there were many ripe fruits that I was able to pick 1 or 2 every morning for my own supply of vitamin C.

The same happens in my garden all the best ones are pecked by the birds. I can pluck only that are nearer to the ground and a little hard. The birds don't allow the soft ones on the tree. They peck and eat them and even drop them.

That tree was planted by the birds so I just let them enjoy some of the ripe guavas.

@aninditasen all of us here love the birds, right? I feel happy when I see them hopping on the branches.

@Hannihar unfortunately I don't know most of the birds. The only ones I know is the sparrow which is the most common bird here and the bato-bato which is a bigger brown bird. There is a group of yellow bird that I call yellow bird. There's a black bird with a white tail that I call "bad bird" because they peck the back of the dogs. There's also a big bird that looks like a crow. And many more.

I don't eat the seeds of the guava although I eat everything when I was young.

I don't like the seeds too, but it takes a lot of time to take them of especially if they are not ripe enough.

@Dextoi what I do is to bite the flesh only and I leave the seeds in whole like a ball.

That's what they say - so much vitamin C in the guava. I always eat what I pick when there are ripe guavas. Maybe 3 days from now there are clusters that would ripen.

@thelme55 the other day I had a cut on my hand that was bleeding. I chewed some young leaves of the guava and applied it on the wound. After 10 minutes, the cut seemed to be healing already.

@Alexandoy You can also make a guava tea from the young leaves of the guava. It is very healthy, too.

You have to be a little quick with harvesting. Maybe leave the guava in your house for couple of days to ripen. My grandparents did that. And they always left a few on trees for birds to enjoy.

The birds have always their share of guava. It is all right with me because it is nice to see the guava being eaten little by little. And I can hear the sound of the birds especially in the morning.

@Alexandoy I think bats are main attackers of guava and banana flowers. They can fold their wings to suit the entry to holes much smaller to their wing size.

@msdivkar maybe there but not here. There are bats here that eat the custard apple because the tree has separate branches. But with other fruits, even with the mango, the bats don't touch.

The bats cannot eat the guava here because of the branches that are intertwined. The bats have a long wingspan that will have a problem with the branches.

Is your guava already fruiting? This guava in the picture was planted by the birds. It just appeared in our front yard and I let it grow.
