Interesting response as well as discussion question,
Potable is drinkable water while crops can be watered with more ppm (parts per million) contaminates. Really what kind and exactly ppm slightly changes with different countries from min/max of recommended levels.
IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY!!!!!!!!!
most modern commercial shipping and most all war ships dont have massive tanks to hold water they harvest or what ever word you like process RO (reverse osmosis) water from any type of water I can go down to my local camping supply store and buy a drinking device(like a straw-big) that I can suck up dirty river water water from a billabong that a mob of sheep just got out of crapping and peeing in. The technology is there just expensive.
I believe the first response is slightly incorrect in their reasoning as may third world countries, as will as Australia, being the driest continent in the world and we put up with jerks in government that allow cotton farming and rice farming in this wonderful country.
I think if you change you wording to If man -person- hell !! just all start re-directing rain water from storm-water to sea( we in Adelaide S A actually do in some councils) to start increasing our water tables. Sorry I do add too many words at time BACK to if man starts using RO water in all countries how have land that can produce produce if had water!!! You are very correct in what you said We all just have to make our politicians do what good for the countries people NOT what fees the pockets of the greedy rich corporations..
If RO units became a normal as a consumable or? It could be produced much cheaper and then yours and my wants and many others eradicat hunger. Dont dump farm produce
Have a good day

In India, there is no need to carry out desalination which is prohibitively exhorbitant. What they should do is to prevent the sweet water flowing in the rivers are joining the sea.If this is stopped, it will take care of the drinking water problems to some extent.
Secondly everyhouse hold should install rainwater harvesting to improve the ground water resources. We have dug so many million borewells, the GW resources are almost getting dried up.
The politicians who have least knowledge and least respect for requirememnt of present generation and future generations as far as drinking water is concerned should give attention to this point and divert required funds to harness the drinking water which is just flowing into ocean.

Sea water doesn't stop hunger, food stops hunger. What's needed is consistent weather in many of these 'third world countries' along with seeds to inspire farmers and create food for themselves, their family and others. Although it seems when many become successful they forget their grass-roots.
