Bears start to roam around again

Romania

We have a bear problem again. In the winter, there were a lot of cases when bears were sighted in our town, people being scared to get out to go to work or school. Some people were attacked and many animals were killed by them. Now the weather is warmer, and they appeared again. Last night, at 5 am, my phone has woken me, as alert was sent that a bear was spotted in our town. We were told that the bear was spotted also in our yard, and the neighbor has had 9 chicken killed by the bear. There is a prohibition in Romania to kill bears since 2014, so their number is way too high. In the past, it was allowed to regulate their number, but not anymore. I am afraid that they will create a lot of havoc, again, if no measure will be taken. Do you live in an area where wild animals create problems?

We have a lot of kangaroos on our property but they are not a danger to us. We don't really have any dangerous wild animals except in the far north where there are crocodiles. The bears sound very worrying.

You can imagine that in a men-bear encounter, the one who will survive is the bear.

@rappeter13 I can well believe that.

I have been around bears most of my life. I respect them, but I don't often worry about it. You can safely coigsist.

When I think of Romania, I think of wolves chasing the sledge of Dracula. :-)

We have a lot of wolves, too. Sometimes, it is scary to go on the streets. But, now, many people joke that the bears are hired by the authorities to keep people inside.

I think of Nadia Comanici and the first perfect ten in gymnastics.

@rappeter13 That's a good idea and certainly an effective one. Romania could export bears as anti-corona patrol.

Wow, I would have thought they would let you shoot bears that attack your animals and encroach upon your property. I assumed most places had "bear" season, but maybe that's just the United States. I used to live in front of a large wooded area, and we would have coyotes running around along with deer and foxes. But not even coyotes bothered us because they just didn't care if you weren't bothering them.

@AmbiePam Authorities don't protect people, they protect the bears, more than it is normal. A person's life is worth all bears' life, if you ask me.

Authorities don't understand or don't care. We have an area which would suffice only for 14-16 bears, and we have more than 100 in our area. But in Romania lives more than 60 percent of the brown bear population of Europe.

Whoa, bears kill chickens? That is scary because when the bear enters your property you don't know what can happen.

They kill dogs, cats, chicken, pigs, everything they can find and destroy the buildings. And they have killed several people, too. Authorities are lame, they don't allow hunters to kill them. If you kill a bear on purpose, even to protect what you have, you will go to jail.

@Alexandoy There should be a control of them. Earlier, there was and there was no problem. The most important is the safety of the citizens. And they kill a lot of animals which are grown by people.

@rappeter13 that is good for protection of wildlife that it is illegal to kill them. However, the authorities should make sure that the bears do not damage properties and do not harm people.

I can certainly understand your frustration with the bear overpopulation. I'd be worried, too- to know that bears are going into your yard!

@BloggerDi And they can enter your house without problems. There is no escape from that.

@Writingghost This bear has torn the iron gate of the neighbor with real ease. So, he could've entered the house, too.

Staying in the house would be a good idea.

We have seen tracks by the river, but we are out all night with the calves and none of us have spotted the animal.

@Writingghost We have way too many. In an area which is suitable for only 14-16 bears, we have more than 100.

@rappeter13 Not a lot, but we have hounds to chase them off it becomes too much of a problem.

Wow! That is a problem. I suggest that pets not be allowed to roam and better enclosures are put up. We have a few wild animals at my house up north and do that.

It is not only about pets. People have chicken, pigs, cows, sheep, because they need that to survive or that is their business. And a bear can go and kill them all in one night.
