Coronavirus Update

I was wondering, do you guys think that grocery stores and other suppliers will close in the near future? Perhaps that's why everyone is stockpiling supplies at their homes. I just went shopping and couldn't find anything left in the store, and that will soon be out as well.

Here even the grocery stores will be closed that is the news. There is some basis to the panic buying after all. Those who didn't stock up will go hungry is what I observed. That is of course until the government arrives. I hope I am wrong. I will keep you updated in the situation in our island province.

No. The grocery stores and places like Walmart are doing exceptionally well right now. They are making massive profits from all of this panic buying and will fare better than anyone else right now economically.
People are basically panic buying out of a psychological need to feel in control of something in a world where right now they feel completely OUT of control. For whatever it gives them a sense of security. Hey, I can't control whether or not I get sick, but I CAN control taking care of my basic needs...
Even if they are way overdoing it.
There is also a very selfish side to this panic buying as well. People are worried there will not be enough for THEM to sustain themselves in the event they might be forced to stay in their homes for months on end. Something that will not happen. But in their minds it is a very big possibility.

@MarbleGlobe200 It is possible. But generally speaking, companies are pretty good about ramping up production when needed. At some point this demand has to taper a bit though I would think. I mean, at some point people can only stock so much stuff in their houses.

I completely agree with that. Even though Walmart is profiting from this, isn't it just some time before industries will not be able to catch up with the demand?

Yeah I'm sure we all will. Also, I heard that governments, at some point in the near future, are going to be sending supplies to people who request them.

@Nevena83 It would be more likely in your country, Serbia as well. Because you guys have a smaller, richer population and have a better government than the U.S. lol

I don't think they will; they've been classified as essential services in a lot of places, and many of the grocery chains are hiring more temporary workers to help stock the shelves and meet demands. The stores here are getting more shipments in daily. The panic buying seems to be subsiding here; I went out yesterday and only a couple people had carts full of whatever they could grab. The rest had what looked like their normal shopping.

So far we do not have to worry about the grocery store closing. People are worried and nervous and stressed so they are stockpiling.
