We're in Lockdown

Boris Johnson made a speech last night saying that the UK is now in lockdown. Only those people who have to work such as emergency services can still go in but the rest of us have to stay at home. All non essential businesses are closed. Even gyms and parks are closed. We're not allowed out unless we want to get some food shopping or medicines and then we have to make sure we're 6 ft or around 2 metres apart. We are allowed out once a day to walk, run or cycle but, other than that, no human contact. My road is going to find this really hard. If one of us is outside and a neighbour from up the road sees us, they automatically walk over for a chat but, if we do that at the moment, we're liable to a hefty fine. I've tried to order groceries to be delivered from my usual supermarket as well as three others and all of the spaces are filled. There's usually an option to collect from your closes store but even those spaces are booked. My next door neighbour noticed that a supermarket about 3 miles outside our village was telling people that if they weren't worried what they got, they could order a box of groceries and household items for £30 and they'd be delivered. Adam tried to book one but, again, they're out of stock. I checked our local airport online this morning as, by about 11.00 I hadn't heard any planes or helicopters. All flights had been cancelled apart from one outgoing to Amsterdam and one incoming from Amsterdam and two helicopter flights - one to Aberdeen and one out to the gas and oil rigs that we have off the Norfolk coast. I must admit, with no people walking around, no vehicles moving and no aircraft it's rather eerie! Thankfully we still have loads of veg. Last night I chopped up a load of different ones, put them in some stock and we had them as a soup. That reminds me that when Adam was talking to our much younger next door neighbour this morning ... from a safe distance! ... he told her that we had loads of onions and she was welcome to have a few if she ran out. She said that she never bought onions as she didn't know what sort of dishes to put them in! We have onions in just about everything from pasta dishes, to curries, to chilli, to stews and soups and even on pizza. How can someone who has a family not know what to do with onions? On a brighter note, about a week ago I potted up some seeds - some Brompton stocks, antirrhinums and sweet peas and all of them are now starting to shoot through. I still have some asters to do which I may do tomorrow if the weather's good and then, next month, I'll pop my runner bean seeds into some pots and hopefully my perennial plants, tomato plants and courgette plants will arrive. It's a shame this virus couldn't have appeared in the summer as I would have been able to feed us and our neighbours with veg.

They're supposed to be really good for you - help to ward off colds I believe - and I have to say that Adam and I rarely have colds compared to our next door neighbour who hardly ever uses them.

Some younger people might find it very hard if they have to start cooking from scratch. Hopefully it will be a good learning experience for them.

For the moment we're not in lockdown. However, there aren't allowed to be any gatherings of more than 2 people. For instance kids aren't allowed to be playing outside. 3 people can't be going for a walk.

It is amazing how much is considered essential business here. Really no use in having an order with that in it.

I have had my daily walk - with dog - and have stayed indoors ever since. I am retired but my wife is still hard at work, although working from home today. She's the Principal Education Officer for Leicester, so she's had a very busy time working out who should and should not be at the 144 schools in the city that she is responsible for!

We have a “Safer At Home” order for now. The order closes non-essential businesses and encourages residents to stay home when possible and avoid gatherings of over 10 people for non-essential purposes. In additional, all business not performing essential services have been ordered to close for 14 days. Stay safe!
