Bread making with beer today

We made bread today. Actually, Vince made bread and I provided encouragement. We’re not out of bread but Vince was intrigued with a recipe that called for a bottle of warm beer, self-raising (all-purpose) flour and not much else. As you can see, it turned out quite well. It is quite crusty and wouldn’t be much for good sandwiches. We spread several slices with butter then Vince had pickled (cured) pork on his and I spread good old Vegemite on mine. Is anyone jealous? We’re off to town in a minute, mostly to get milk. I wonder what we won’t be able to buy. Edit: It was plain flour. Thanks, Anna (@LadyDuck) for mentioning it.

Oh that is so wicked. It sounds delicious well done Vince. I would follow your example and have Marmite (= Vegemite here in the UK) and butter on the bread!

@JudyEv I don't mind vegemite and yes, it's very similar to Marmite. I guess there's a reason we have the expression "it's like Marmite" LOL You either like it or you don't.

@Lushlala Where have you had Vegemite? I'm curious.

Mostly it's only Australians who like it. I wrote about it some time back. You can catch up here if you wish to: https://www.mylot.com/post/3235356/australians-and-vegemite It's a spread a bit like Marmite if perhaps you have that.

@JudyEv I seem to be reverting to old fashioned things, like making my own breadcrumbs and a delicious bread and butter custard pudding to use up stale bread!

@valmnz Maybe for us oldies it's sort of a survival mode thing. I keep thinking I'll make a steam pudding whereas normally I don't bother with such things. Bread and butter custard sounds delicious but I think Vince had it so often as a child he doesn't really like it now.

It's a good time to do this sort of thing. We can't get out and do stuff so we might as well try to do a few things we'd always thought we'd try.

@simone10 We had one too but we were eating too much bread. Then it didn't get used for ages and in the end we sold it. We could do with it now.

I'm curious. I've heard other people talk about Vegemite very negatively. What is it made of; and what does it taste like? Good luck with your shopping trip.

I hope about it some time back. Here's the link. It's a yeast extract and most Australians love it. I think others use too much and it puts them off.

It looks good. These seem like the days to make something like that. That just gave me an idea,,alot of people here make a sourdough kind of bread that requires incubation in the refrigerator for several days. I haven't done it before, perhaps I could. FYI we have lots of pickled things here too. It is called the same.

@JudyEv I don,t think most Americans outside the Jewish community know what L o x iss... I have seen it but if someone asked me what it was I couldn,t say. I would have called it smoked salmon too.

Thanks re the pickled stuff. Sometimes I get queries about it so I try to explain stuff as I go. We all call stuff different things. For instance, I'd never heard of lox. We call it smoked salmon.

@snowy22315 Pony (TheHorse) calls it lox, which is where I first heard of it. Seems funny that it's a Jewish word.

@Tina30219 Something different to eat I guess. We rarely have any cake or biscuit type foods as Vince is Type 2 diabetic. It doesn't affect us much but we do try to steer clear of cakes and biscuits.

I had an upset stomach last night and came up in welts for some reason. We had take-away fish and chips and it was pretty greasy which would account for the tummy issues. The welts appear very occasionally and has to be a food allergy of some kind. Probably to an additive of some sort. Thanks for asking. It was a good chance to tell someone what was happening rather than just saying 'I'm fine thanks"

@lgm92881719 And mostly no-one wants to know if you're not well and 'I'm fine, thanks' slips out before you remember you could have had a big grizzle about how you haven't been well.
