school lunches (and breakfasts!)

Our school district has been making brown-bagged lunches and breakfasts for all of the children (ages 1-18) in the area, regardless of income level. We got an email from the district at the beginning of the quarantine stating where we were to pick up the lunches. Originally we had to have the kids with us when picking up the meals, but they've relaxed that requirement as the shelter-in-place restrictions tightened, so now an adult can pick up the lunches without bringing all of their children and reduce the amount of exposure.
Currently, meals are picked up daily with two bags for each child -- one with that day's lunch plus another with the next day's breakfast. The breakfasts always include either a carton of milk or juice plus a piece of fruit in addition to the entree, and the lunches always include a vegetable.
Today the kids can pick either a turkey and cheese sandwich or two mini cheeseburgers (we don't pick at the time, they just hand the correct number of bags to us and we find out what's inside when we get home), plus some corn and either some green beans or fresh broccoli.
Tomorrow's breakfasts are a chocolate chip Benefit Bar, a carton of chocolate milk (a treat for them!), and either an apple or orange. Since only one child in the house likes the Benefit Bars, we'll save those as snacks for him and will just make something like zucchini bread and scrambled eggs for breakfast in the morning.
This has been extremely helpful for stretching our groceries and making sure the kids have good nutrition during this time. I'm especially grateful for that since most of the adults in the house haven't been able to return to our jobs and aren't earning any income right now.
What are you having for lunch today? Do you already have plans for breakfast?

I have to figure out my own lunch still! I think I might have some teriyaki beef and rice that's leftover from another meal.

@amadeo It wasn't bad. I wish it had been pieces of beef rather than made with ground beef, but that's harder to come by right now.

That is actually pretty cool, conservatives must be flipping their lid/ We definitely did not have any of that when I went to school but to be fair they served us in school lunch thing. Sometimes I remember money being involved but for the most part think the state payed for it. I think its great. If You want kids to be raised right then treat them right and most likely they will grow up and be good people because you showed them you gave a crap about them.

Kids still need to eat, so let those conservatives flip their lids!

That is great the school district is doing it for everybody, so there is no stigma involved.

I agree! So many families are needing it more than they might have beforehand, due to lost wages from not being able to go to work.

This is wonderful, the schools are doing this for the children! Some children, these are the only nutritious foods they get, ever!

@spiderdust They really shouldn't include chocolate milk, it's not good for them.

@kobesbuddy Yeah, although it is keeping up their morale. They're getting plenty of non-chocolate milk right now, although I'm running out of fresh milk and having to resort to powdered.

I do wish the vegetable servings were bigger and that they sent home more white milk and less chocolate milk, but I'm still thankful they have this service at all!

They were driving around to the different neighbor hoods in the district and letting you get them off tne bus. The last time we went and got packets for the kids school work ( since there at Chris's mom's where internet isn't good) they gave us a bag full of stuff for each kid

Someone just now went out to get today's lunches, so I'm curious to see what they'll be eating today. The kids had some granola bars sent for this morning's breakfast, but some of them also ate some grapefruit. Someone on the local Buy Nothing group posted last that they had free sacks of grapefruit from their tree sitting on their porch, so I got a bag.

@thislittlepennyearns Usually I wouldn't get this kind (it's white grapefruit, which is much less sweet than pink or red), but free grapefruit is still free vitamin C food.

@spiderdust we sometimes save just enough for one person, but when you have a few of those it works out. They know when I call for them to come to lunch, they better hurry, because it is first come, first served. They get to pick what leftover they get. Gives them a little pep in their step at meal time.

Would you believe I have very little leftovers in my fridge at the moment?

That is such a good help for so many. I just hope people aren't taken advantage of it.

@spiderdust that would be the first place that they wouldn't be doing it then. As so many do do it. I know many personally.

The people who are taking advantage of it are the kids who need it. There are no welfare queens driving around and collecting free food that they don't actually need.

This a great service especially during this time when people do not have much financial resources right now I am so glad they are keeping up with this in spite of the current situation at hand. I am glad too see that someone is doing something positive too help with the current situation.
