So during this lockdown, quarantine, stay at home whatever you want to call it almost all of us had done some house cleaning. Tell you what, did you know that there might be silver lying around your house?
I know some of you know but for those who don't had you heard of junk, cull or constitutional silver? These are coins that don't really have numismatic value ( although some do) that are worth more than their face value simply because of their silver content.
I would like to focus on American Washington quarters and Roosevelt dimes because they are numerous , easiest to find and had been the international standard currency for a long time. So this is what we will be looking for:
1) Washington quarters 1932-1964 is 6.25 grams 90%silver 10%copper
2) Roosevelt dimes 1946-1964 is 2.5 grams 90% silver 10%copper.
There are also countries with late silver coinage like Canada, Australia and New Zealand but will not touch on them here. So what are you waiting for? Search those old coin jars, examine those shiny quarters mom, dad grandpa grandma gave to you and for those not living in the U.S., check those loose change of relatives that had travelled abroad during the 60s -70s when they were still abundant.Good luck searching. Do you collect coins? Have you any? Silver is a good hedge in case another financial crisis occurs after this virus thing is over
Picture is from my personal collection
Learn more about Silver Quarters being one of the best ways to invest in silver. Starting in 1932, the US government minted silver quarters with 90% silver.

Then I think you better start searching them just for the fun and thrill of treasure hunting to kill boredom during the pandemic lock down I can't remember the exact dates but I think the Italian Lira had late issue that still contain some silver.

@LadyDuck yes error coins could have great value because some collectors specialize on them. Constitutional silver most of the time are hunted down just for silver content.

@louievill The Italian Lira 500 Silver Coin had a series that was mint with the wind blowing from the wrong side, those have a good value, I should check them, but I have so many more urgent things to do.

Good for you, if this pandemic becomes uncontrollable and the economy collapses those dimes and quarters would have greater buying power than a hundred dollar worthless paper bill

I know a thing or two even about ancient Chinese dynasty coins I had been collecting since I was very young. The coins of Wang Mang the usurper during the Han dynasty had very interesting shapes like knifes and spades. It's never too late to have some coins.

@louievill I didn't give you credit for an ancient coin collector .You definitely have a good knowledge of Chinese history.Xin dynasty was established by Wang Mang, which lasted only 14 years.

They look exactly like the U.S. dimes and quarters that are in circulation now, the only difference is all 1964 and older is 90% silver.
I have have war time German 1 Reichspfennig in my collection with swastika, both the bronze and later zinc version.
I have a complete set of our large silver 1 peso FIL-AM era except the date 1906-s which is very hard to find and unaffordable for ordinary people like me.

@thelme55 I bought it on Ebay many many years ago, they were very cheap but there are some countries where they cannot be sold, if I remember right, some of them were Israel and Austria.

What was the document about? Might be worth some money. Why lose motivation?

I gave all my American coins to my grandson Felipe many years ago. He had a beautiful coin collection and even a special book to place them. When he grew up, he went abroad with his father and changed the coins to have more pocket money.

Yes that is what collections are for, it's something to appreciate, later to give to our loved ones to inherit and or something that they or we can sell when we are ready to part with it and get more money for what the coins were originally worth

Congratulations, that's one good purpose why people keep them although others may have other intentions.

It's amazing how we could make money if we are just a little bit more observant. People would buy anything reasonably priced if the item is what they collect. We cant live on bank interest but they could live on the interest when they lend out money we deposit to them

That's nice, besides the pleasure we get from them the value just keeps going up. Do you collect anything in particular?

I'm a serious coin collector too and had been collecting for just about as long as you. I use to just collect any foreign coins but as I matured I began to specialize on ancient and historical as well as colonial Philippines more, I've got a couple of gold in my collection too. Glad to know that we are into the same thing
