Now I Worry and Pray that this Doesn't Spread for My Mother's Sake and the Sake of all of the Residents at her Nursing Home.

My brother got a call from the nursing home where our mother resides. A former resident of the nursing home tested positive for COVID19. They person was a short-term resident and had been discharged. Because this resident was in another wing, we were told we shouldn't worry. The staff stays on that wing and does not go into the memory wing. They said they are taking precautionary measures so that this doesn't spread. They are testing the staff on that ward. And of course if a resident is presenting symptoms they will be tested as well. With all of the stories of nursing homes getting an outbreak, I try not to worry, but of course I do. I haven't seen my mother in over a month. My heart aches. We do video chats with her a couple times a week. She loves talking to Little Miss. It brings such a beautiful smile to her face. Praying that she remains safe.

Prayers for all of them, hope nobody on that wing got to cross to the other side, the elderly are some of the most vulnerable to the infection so the home should do the best they can.

It started me thinking about so much. What about the laundry? Do they have a designated staff member for that? I believe that the laundry people serve the entire home.

@louievill I hope that it doesn't spread. They are cautious, I was actually hopeful after talking with a friend who works there. Have yet to speak to her after hearing this news though. I know she too will be worried for herself and her family as well.

@ElusiveButterfly things beyond our control makes things more complicated, they should step up the disinfecting while all we can do is hope and pray the barrier would be enough.

She is, but I am not sure they are letting visitors near the facility. I will ask my brother to see if we can arrange to do a visit that way.

@Jessicalynnt I am wondering how confused it would make my mother to see us outside her window.

Don't they check the employees temps when they go in for shifts? Which would help too. I hope your mom will be okay

You an be asymptomatic and not have fever, and still be contagious. They do take temps, require that all staff change into facility issued scrubs at the facility, and follow safety protocols.

I had a meltdown when I heard because of the knowledge that the residents are the most vulnerable to this virus.

I can certainly understand your concern as this is very serious. I'm sure the nursing home is doing everything possible. I will pray for her.

Thank you Sharon. There is hallway and reception are between the 2 wards. However, I do know that laundry is only in one wing and that is on the side where my mother resides.

@ElusiveButterfly As long as they are taking the proper precautions, things should be ok.

I really hope that your mom remains well. It must be very hard not seeing here in so long. I know how much I miss seeing my family and even though we can do Facetime, etc it still isn't the same as a real life hug. Prayers for your mom and all the residents in her nursing home

Thank you Marilyn. Yes, FaceTime does help somewhat. I am not sure my mother really understands why we are using that to see her, but actually I am glad that she doesn't understand so she doesn't worry.

In nursing homes and senior assisted living facilities everywhere, that's got to be the biggest fear they are all facing. I hope that nobody else in your mom's facility gets sick, and that everyone else stays nice and healthy!

I was hoping that we wouldn't have to worry about it. But, in the back of my mind, I knew it was a possibility.

That is extremely frightening. Prayers that your mother stays safe. We FaceTime with our family all the time. It’s almost as good as being there except there are no hugs or real kisses.

This must be so awful. I suppose you have to be grateful for video chats but it must be so hard for all concerned.

I usually cry a little bit when the video chat is done. Just isn't the same as sitting with her and holding her hand.
