Size DOES Matter--at Least in Bed

Now there's a provocative title! ...and yes, my photo is misleading. I am a voracious reader and an occasional insomniac. Rather than waste the small hours of the morning lamenting the fact that dreamland is elusive, I immerse myself in whatever book I happen to be reading. More often than not, my library books come to me in digital form (I’ll be honest, I’m lazy. Why physically go to the library when I can peruse the virtual shelves from the comfort of my couch). Reading on a Kindle (a Kindle Paperwhite--I do NOT want a tablet-style reader) is not my first choice. I still prefer the smell of paper and the weight of a book in my hands. I like being able to tell by feel how much progress I’ve made. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have been surprised by the abrupt ending of a book when I had no idea I was near its conclusion, or when I’ve been ready to be done with a tome only to discover that I haven’t yet passed the 50% point. I’m currently reading a biography of Audrey Hepburn entitled Dutch Girl by Robert Matzen. It wasn’t available in digital format through my library system so I checked the hefty volume out of our local library a couple of weeks ago. And that’s when I discovered that size DOES matter, at least in bed. I’ve always read in bed. Reading is my way of winding down at the end of the day. I don’t sit propped up with pillows, I like to curl up on my side and snuggle down under the covers. That’s works with paperbacks and small books. But my current read is a bit too big for that. I need two hands to hold the book, and that makes my usual nighttime reading position a little awkward. My Kindle may have its drawbacks, but for bedtime reading it is ideal. I can hold it in one hand and flip pages with my thumb. Even better, my Kindle has a built-in light that I can dim so no one else knows about my nocturnal adventuring. For now, though, I’m going to have to sit-up to read!

Here are my musings on the topic Kindle vs. paper books.
When I had unpacked my Kindle, I wanted to get going. E-simpleton that I am I thought I’d connect it with my computer, find a book, click on ‘Buy’ and start...

I will sometimes read in bed. It doesn't keep me awake though.

It took me a long time to get used to reading on my Kindle. But it does have it's advantages but I still like a real book.

So far I haven't tried any of those reader thingies. I already have shelves full of books to read on real paper!

I didn't think I would ever be tempted by reading on a screen. However on a camping trip (Good night that was more than 10 years ago now!!). It was cold, everyone else was asleep and I decided to check out a Classic Book App that was loaded on an iPod Touch. I was sold. I still do read real books, and ultimately prefer real books, but the Kindle has saved me from outpacing my available shelf space and my husband has no clue how many books I purchase over the course of year.

@SophiaMorros Yes I can definitely see the benefits when travelling. At this stage of my life though I have little time for reading so I never need to take more than one book anywhere with me. And if I can't sleep I usually get my laptop out and catch up with some work!

@Fleura I read in bed before going to sleep and if I wake up during the night. When I'm working on things around the house I usually listen to audio books.

Reading in bed...haven't done that in years. Audiobooks while sewing is my go to....but I read books on paper and on my iPad as well.

Size is the reason why I prefer e-book.

I only like paper books, I sit with some pillows behind my back to read in bed and I am perfectly comfortable.

Maybe I need a Kindle like yours with a built-in light. I don't like to turn my bedside light on as I don't want to wake Vince. I can't read in bed for too long as I get aches and pains.
