Bringing a Smile to Our Little One's Face

With schools closed in our state, the kids are being home-schooled. The classmates do not have contact with one another. It saddened me to see how much Little Miss was missing her friends from school. We do have contact with her teacher and get videos of her reading books or doing other activities that are of interest to her. She loves getting these videos. Yesterday, she received a brief video from her friend Wyatt, just saying hello and telling of how he caught salamanders. Little Miss was delighted to see the video that he sent via her teacher. So, when it is nice out today, we will make a video for her classmates. But, there was one person she keeps saying that she wishes she could see and missed so much. It was her best friend Harper. Harper was in another classroom, but they played together on the playground everyday. Warmed my heart to see the two of them together. I asked her teacher if she would give our phone number to Harper's parents in hopes that they would call so the two girls could talk to each other. I was cooking dinner last night when an unrecognizable phone number came up on my phone. I almost didn't answer it, but did. It was Harper's mom. She asked if we could do FaceTime, and thankfully I have an iPhone, so we could do it!! The girls were so happy to see one another. They spent a half hour showing each other their toys and laughing. They were surprised that they both had the same toy, a stuffed white cat that purrs and meows. Little Miss said they had twins. I asked Harper's mom if we could let the girls do video chat more often so they could stay close. She agreed. So happy to bring a smile to their little faces. It was clear that they truly missed one another.

I am so glad her mother was open to them doing FaceTime. It was sad enough to know that at the end of the school year they would be going to different schools and probably not see each other again. I hope that they can remain in touch.

The girls really enjoyed talking to one another. Not the same as in real life, but this will do for now.

That was nice. Are any schools still open anywhere?

I believe some private schools remain open. I was talking with someone in North Carolina and her daughter's school was open. She pulled her out because of her having asthma and didn't want to risk it.

@ElusiveButterfly Private schools generally have smaller class sizes, don't they?

That's so nice. It will help lessen the loneliness that both must feel at this time.

Little Miss is such a social butterfly. She loves the company of other children and being an only child isn't easy for her.

@ElusiveButterfly Let's hope, once the downturn begins, that things will get back to normal.

She has other favorites that she often talks about. Once they get to do a virtual circle time it will bridge the gap.

That is so sweet. While I know kids don't get the significance of what is going on it certainly affects them deeply. Kids aren't meant to be cooped up, and parents weren't meant to have to make them!

We usually get outside everyday if the weather permits. This gives her the opportunity to run around and play. Not the same without her friends.

It's nice that she got a video from one of her friends. My eldest has talked to one of her friends a few times, and it's nice that they can at least video chat.

A very touching story, and a case of technology being used for good. I hope the two of them FaceTime frequently in the hopes of remaining close even as we practice social distancing.

She is only in preschool so there isn't much they can do. There will eventually be circle time for the entire classroom so they can interact with one another. The teacher will read books and do activities with them.
