Introducing our thicknesser

This is another of our power tools which has had a lot of use. Here, it is called a ‘thicknesser’ or planer. Wooden boards are fed through the machine and the blades in the machine shave off the top layer of timber, giving a perfectly level surface. The boards are then usually turned over and put through again with the other surface to the top. The black knob at the top can be wound down bit by bit if more needs to be taken off the board. The end result is ‘dressed ‘timber which is smooth and level.
We had a bit of trouble with boards ‘sticking’ on their way through the machine but, after consulting Google, we cleaned the rollers with methylated spirits and had no more trouble.
We now have a number of smooth pieces of pine with which to make our display cases. The first one has been made, glued and clamped. We’ll see how it looks tomorrow.

Will you sand the wood down?

@JudyEv is it similar to the lathe machine?

@Alexandoy Not really. You feed the piece of timber in one end and horizontal spinning blades take off just the top surface of the wood as it passes through the machine - left to right in the photo.

@DocAndersen We bought a kangaroo jack once. Have you heard of them? When we bought Vince said you hardly ever need them but when you do, nothing else will do the job.

I think I prefer planer. “Thicknesser” might have me sounding like Sylvester the Cat. ![](/Content/images/emotes/rofl.gif)

I knew what it was just from the picture. My husband always wanted a thickness planer, but the space, didn't dictate that he could have 1 for the number of times that he'd actually put it into use.
He has a very good friend that he grew up with, who he and his brother own a sawmill, and anything we need done in that planning department they do for us. They have come in quite handy over the years, when we need to buy any wood, they offer us the very best that they have.

@JudyEv It is laid out a lot different. It was my father in laws before he passed and he did a lot of wood working projects.

That's a wonderful power tool to have especially for those who love to do woodwork. It would be a perfect gift for my husband. He enjoys carpentry and does this leveling mostly manually using his tools.

@JudyEv You are right. He does it more out of hobby and doing it manually gives him that satisfaction. Moreover, he works only on small projects.

I have used a planer many times in the past when I worked various construction jobs. After planing, it's nice to give the boards a good sanding to get them all nice and smooth! I hope your display case turns out very nice!
