Lock It Down Every Year

India
April 21, 2020 3:59am CST
We should celebrate Lockdown day once in a year for mother earth. For the environment, it will go a long way in improving the air quality. Economically, it will affect directly, but you will contribute to the nature indirectly by staying home for one long month. We can live in a less economic condition, but we can't live in polluted cities with a noxious environmental factor. Due to the current situation, We can see/observe clearly the air quality has improved, the water is crystal clear in the canals again. This is because there's lower levels of nitrogen dioxide mainly emitted by the active motor vehicles on the road. This should be like running the whole world, staying indoors for the whole one month. Possible? Or not using vehicles for one long month? Do we really care ?

Good idea! It should start with one day a week and later on, one week per year.

Yes that means : More electric cars to prevent smoggy conditions, Allow transportation only of medical emergencies, fire brigade etc,and Use bicycles, in place of scooters. What else?

@stapllotik Even though it may not reduce the carbon footprint by huge yardstick, it would at least help us to see cleaner sky and lesser noise pollution.

@stapllotik After this virus I do not believe people would like that idea. I know I would not. I like my freedom more going out if I want to or staying home if I want to.

I respect that but once in a week or one week in a year seems viable.

Agree on that! Earth hour is not enough and we need at least a month of lock-down.

Thank You! The problem is that we are not able to strike a balance between development and nature.

@stapllotik and I think I will take a picture of the nearby mountains. The windmills are said to be visible now.

I care about the quality of air we breathe. But many do not it seems. What a shame.

Appreciate that. Hopefully, the transitioning to electric vehicles is one solution that can significantly contribute to clear the air pollution to some extent.

I applaud you for this comment because my husband and I were saying exactly the same thing just this week. Considering how much damage the human race causes the environment, how mother earth has been healing while we've been under lockdown, we should at least consider it. But it would have to be global and very well-coordinated. Is it feasible? Probably not with all the greed out there. Everyone puts the bottom line above all else.

Thank You. As for feasibility, you are right the greed factor will work against it. Sadly, human development goes hand in hand with smoke, poisonous gases and chemicals, noise pollution and whatnot. Knowingly unknowingly we have become like a cancer for the earth. We need sincere efforts from leaders to initiate and implement Eco friendly plans in development work. Can we dream a world of vehicle running without fuel? Just imagine how revolutionary it would be?

You are right.Countries with the lowest rate or negligible rate of pollution are least bothered. Air pollution is invisible but deadly problem. I don't know if its travel from one continent to another?

The irony is, earlier we were polluting our cities with no masks on. Now the air is clean and everyone is wearing a mask outside.
