Weddings: Tearful celebration!

I live in Lesotho, one of the poor countries in Southern African Development Community (SADC). Not long ago mothers used to gather around and sing on wedding day. Ironically, the bride and her mother would be in tears. I thought that was rather a backward behaviour. Then I noticed that the same goes for mothers of brides in developed countries, they too cry. One wonders:The couple chose each other and are supposed to be celebrating they accomplished goal. How come then that mothers display melancholy instead of joyous spirit especially when the couple exchange vows?

@17gracemalealea They are not sad. They are happy so that is a good thing.

Although they have much to be happy about, I guess some mothers are sad that their daughters are moving on in their lives.

Yes. It could be empty-nest syndrome... learning to live without patenting responsibility could affect some of us negatively while some would look forward to catching up with neglected relationship with beloved spouse.

Maybe they are crying tears of joy or because they will not be together from now on?

I guess you could say it's tears of happiness? Ladies all over the world cry at things that tugs at their heartstrings such as cute puppies and romantic scenes because ironically, they make them happy.

I didn't cry when my daughter got married but I knew I wasn't losing her, I was gaining a very nice son in law.

Emotions seem to me to just take over at times from the unconscious, I suppose, and just express themselbes in laughter or tears without being controlled.

Possibly the wedding trigger some repressed emotions...hence uncontrollable. Often we mothers are challenged to let go our children in similar incidents.
