30 Day Music Challenge: Day 2 (Your Least Favorite Song)

I feel odd about mentioning this one for several reasons. First of all, I do not like to give attention to my least favorite things. I also don't truly have a "least favorite" song, per se; I simply don't let anything that I'm not intrigued by play all the way through. And finally, most of the songs I do not care for are probably some of the most popular (or were in their time), meaning that I risk the rebuttal of countless overzealous fans coming to defense. I was able to narrow it down to several candidates, and after much consideration, I will have to go with "The Sign" by Ace of Base. Why? It's basically a matter of over-exposure as a child. My friends (and friends' siblings) wouldn't stop playing it over and over ad nauseum whenever I would visit them. The kids at school wouldn't stop singing it. The kids in my extracurricular activities wouldn't stop singing it. Everybody was so obsessed with it. I thought the lyrics that were simplistic and generic and thought that electronic backing tracks also had a "watered down" feel to them. Plus I simply was not into mainstream electronic/pop music. Overall, the song itself is not THAT bad, but you know how overzealous fans can be. What might have otherwise been a mild dislike - or maybe just a passive indifference - can be easily ruined by people making fun of you and putting down your own taste in music and continuously tormenting you for not liking the song as much as everyone else does. I constantly heard from everyone who wasn't family all the reasons why "The Sign" was the best song every written and why **I** should think so! As you can probably imagine, that can make you hate something you otherwise might not have had any antipathy towards. In fact, it gave me a disdain for all things Ace of Base that lasted years. Eventually I was able to warm up to some of their other work and I now actually like a handful of their songs. To this day, I have never been able to warm up to "The Sign," however. I have gotten to where I can hear it without wanting to puke, so I guess that's progress! Feel free to comment with your own least favorite song (and don't worry, I won't judge you!)
