That Was a Nice Conversation

Finally got my uncle in the nursing home on the phone. I don't think he knew who I was. But I went along with his talking just to be able to hear his voice. I was so relieved to know he is not sick, or he didn't seem to be. He laughed and even though he was not making any sense when he talked, we joked and like I said, just to hear his voice made my day. I have to believe part of him is still in there somewhere.

I'm so glad that you were able to hear his voice. My heart breaks at the thought of living another day without speaking to my mother. Her alzheimers has gotten so terrible in the past couple of months since her retirement home went into a lock down that she isn't coherent on the phone, and visitors are restricted. I try to hold tight to the last visit we had.

@Juliaacv not being able to visit your mom because of the virus makes this a million times worse. I'm so disturbed when I hear people say this is a hoax

@Marilynda1225 I know, her home has been on lockdown since the end of the first week of March. It was really hard to watch my Dad die slowly, that last year was hard, but not to know if she is suffering or see her or hear her voice is much worse. I have an active imagination, and that is difficult. Those that say this is a hoax are probably positive and spreading it.

Yes, part of him is still there, even if it just appears periodically. I could always see a little of my mom even when the dementia left her barely able to speak a few words.

@CarolDM I remember one time I couldn't get her to take her medicine. I tried everything, but she just nodded and walked around aimlessly. My shoulders drooped, and I sighed. She saw me sigh, came over, and silently patted my back. She had no idea what was wrong and what I wanted her to do, but she understood I was frustrated with myself and tried to comfort me, vague as it may have been.

Yes, it seems part of him is there if he is talking to you and can say he is not sick. It is sad we can't visit certain ones now with this virus situation.

He is not saying he's not sick, just the sound of his voice I felt like he isn't sick. Thanks and good to see you. I have been planning for months to see him. Maybe one day.

I'm glad you heard your uncle, but I'm sorry he doesn't remember you. I have a feeling that his memory is now in a worse state than before, right?

Right before this mess started, we had planned to drive to Richmond VA (about three hours away) to visit my cousin who is in a nursing home with Alzheimers. But the day before we were supposed to go, her sister called to tell my my cousin had to be taken to the ER. She was dehydrated, but came back the next day. Now I don't know when we'll get to see her or if she'll still know me. She and I are the same age and were close when we were children. I know it meant the world to you to hear your uncle's voice.

That is just so sweet, though the situation may not be for the best, at least you can have those moments of talking and there might even be some things he is still connected to when talking.

That’s great that you got to speak with him and at least hear his voice. I know how much you love each other and how close you have always been. It’s such a nasty disease. Do you remember when he started showing signs of it? Most people I know of don’t develop it very early.

@CarolDM I totally understand. My grandmother started at age 93. Throughout my childhood and into my adulthood, she was fine and loving. She even came to our wedding from California.
