Could Have Gotten A Free Hoodie

We went to Menard's yesterday to pick up a few things. My wife found a hoodie she liked. It even SAID Menard's on it. When we pulled the cart to the checkout (there they empty your cart for you) she pulled the hoodie out and was going to hand it to us.
"Oh, no. We're BUYING that." I told her.
She was like, "Oh," and then looked for the tag to scan and rang it up. But we easily could have said, "Oh, thank you," and walked out of the store with a free hoodie.

I'm surprised they didn't ask or looks for a tag first before assuming. I've never been in a Menards and would love to go look maybe I'll for a trip in soon. Are they like a home improvement center with appliances?

@porwest we will be needing a new fridge/freezer one day and I was thinking maybe we could check it out on Sunday but it's the next city over so we'll see. I have any other things to get done too.

@MarshaMusselman Hope you find what you are looking for. I have been wanting to get a stand up freezer for a while now, and just haven't done it. One of these days.

I would have been too honest as well to just walk out with it. Not too long ago, I was shopping at the grocery store and after I had checked out, paid, and pushed my cart out to the parking lot, I realized that the cashier forgot to scan several big items that I had tucked under the shopping cart. I loaded my groceries and then went back inside to have the cashier ring up the items she missed. I could have just as easily put them in my vehicle and just drove away.

I probably would have done exactly the same thing in this situation. Ultimately we all know that if things aren't paid for on the front end, we'll wind up paying for them anyway on the back end. Plus, at the same time, in our own lives we wouldn't want someone to bilk us out of our own money. Why would we feel okay about bilking others?

I don't think the people watching the cameras would have recognized what was going on. They would have only seen us put it into our cart, and they would have seen the cashier holding it up and handing it to us. I don't think they have THAT high of security in these kinds of places that they would detect anything other than someone blatantly stealing something.

Good for you for doing the right thing. I would have as well. I've actually gone back into a store to pay for things that I found still in my cart after getting to my car.

It truly is the right thing to do. When I think of how something lands on the shelf and ultimately in my use, I often think about all of the many jobs that single item produces. From the guy who cultivates the raw materials, to the guy who delivers those raw materials to the factory, to the factory workers who produce it, and the people who warehouse and ship it, the people who transport it, the people who unpack it and load the shelves, and the people who ring up the bill. Not paying for just one item impacts a lot of people ultimately no matter how insignificant it seems.

Yep. Besides, that takes money out of a lot of pockets. The people who made it, the people who distributed it, the people who shipped it, the people who stocked it...and the list goes on. Even the smallest things have way more impact than any of us sometimes fully realize.

I knew you'd be honest. One time I was putting my groceries in the car and saw I hadn't paid for the bananas. Dag gone it! I was too tired to go back in and go through check out, so I asked a lady who was walking in if she would take them in for me and told her why. This was pre-Covid, of course.

I'd have probably just kept the bananas by that time. Especially considering there have been a couple of times I was double charged or over charged for something. But in the store, in the moment, yeah, I was more than willing to do the right thing and make sure I paid for the hoodie.

The tag must have been caught at the exit door.
