Was there any doubt the most famous song in Hollywood history from arguably the most beloved movie of all time would top the list? “Over the Rainbow” routinely tops all Hollywood song lists and there seems to be no disagreement. You all know the movie and song. No explanation required. “Over the Rainbow” was composed by Harold Arlen (music) and E.Y. “Yip” Harburg (lyrics). Arlen’s other well know song is “Stormy Weather” famously sung by Lena Horne. He also composed two other Judy Garland standards “Get Happy” from “Summer Stock” and “The Man That Got Away” from “A Star is Born.” Harburg wrote two of the best known and most poignant depression era songs in “Brother Can You Spare a Dime” and “It’s Only a Paper Moon.” He enjoyed Broadway success with “Finian’s Rainbow.” The communist Harburg was blacklisted from 1950 to 1962. “Over the Rainbow” has been covered endlessly but there is only one version you really want to hear: Judy Garland’s defining original. No one can touch the heartfelt power of her voice.

i love this song. A friend of mine used to sing this with her band. It was the way they closed their show at night. It stopped everyone in their tracks.

One of my favorite movies since i can remember. It used to play once a year, on my birthday. I was sad to only see it once a year, that and Willy Wonka.

You're right about no-one else coming near Garland's version.

Can you imagine the outrage if this hadn’t won? Even now? No, there never was any doubt. Most excellent series.

There is also a version in Latvian but my all-time favorite is the one by Harry Nilsson,

You're right. This is the only acceptable version. I love this song too. Now, I want to watch the movie again.

I love that song. I have been watching Dispatches from Elsewhere which reminds of The Wizard of OZ.

"Over the Rainbow" was nearly cut from the film. What a mistake that would have been!

I've heard many people sing that song but none can compare to Judy Garland.
